TnUUSDAY, June 12, 1902,
Georgians don’t propose
to wait for an act of congress
to elect her Senators by the
people. The primary does the
work, and does it admirably.
There never was a com¬
munity that didn’t have its
croakers. In some places but
few exist; in others, many..
They are a highly, necessary
pest and we couldn’t very well
get along without them. Dur¬
ing the reign of Phnrao the
Lord saw fit to send a plague
upon Fgypt. The theory of
evolution solves the problem
of the croaker’s ancestry.
All the states have laws
providing a punishment for
lynchers, and any honest ofgtiilty jury
will return a verdict
whenever the evidence justi¬
fies. But there is no law on
earth to prevent a governor
exercising his authority to
grant a pardon when the exi¬
gencies demand as was evi¬
denced by Gov. Jelks, of Al¬
abama, the other day. in par¬
doning three white men who
had been sent up for lynching
a gang of nigger brutes.
An insurance agency in
New Orleans is being sued
by a fire insurance company
to recover the amount of a
policy paid because of the
burning of a gin house belong
ing to a negro. The
ny alleges that it instructed
the agents not to write insur¬
ance for negroes, and did not
know the insurance was on a
negro’s gin house until after
the payment had been made.
The insurance company is a
Northern concern. Are our
Northern insurance friends
boycotting the negro on ac¬
count of his race and color?—
