After the Moderate Republican
Convention in Cincinnati next month,
t!ie Presidential canvas? will begin to
resume proper shape. But a few
weeks mere and we shall know who
v ill be the standard hearer of that
1 at oh of the party opposed to den.
Grant. The very be t talent ts the
Republican party will be in attend
ance, and will meet with a firm resolve
to overthrow the present corrupt dy
nasty. Trumbull, Grata Brown and
(..her men of high rank are spoken of.
who if nominated will readily cotri
i and the confidence and support of
the parry. Mr. < > reply's chances have
long since played out. and very prop
erly. tor his protection views are oh- j
j etiotsahie to the great muss of Wes- j
tern voters. Certain it is that Grant
v ,51 have a “foetnan worthy of his j
ftecl" in the nominee of that Con
vention, and one far better fitted by
nature and practice for the important
a.id responsible position. It is proper
to remark that we have long regarded
the nomination of Gen. Grant by the
Philadelphia Convention as a foregone
conclusion, although his administra
tion has been rendered odious by the
amount of corruption and fraud which
has been perpetrated ever since its
commencement. But, the bread and
meat of so many wily politicians de- j
pend upon his continuance in power
that every effort will he made, and we
think with the very best prospect of
again placing him before the people
for their suffrage.
When Summer and Wilson of Mas
sachusetts, with other great lights who
have so long dictated for the party
weal meet in convention with the res
tive masses from all sections of the
Union and concentrate their energies
against the present Administration irs
overthrow will he secured. It will be
well for that Contention, however, to
ponder well their action. The popu
larity of Judge Davis, the nominee of
the Labor Reform party, must be re
spected. llis antecedents as a politi
cian and as a member of the Repub
lican party cannot be ignred without
hazard, llis consistency as an anti
slavery man, his moderate eonserva
tive views since the war, and the fact
that he lias been nominated bv the la
hoting men—the hone and sinew of
th« country—lias given him a promi
nence with the masses North and West
which will demand consideration.—
Compared with Grant the latter in
point of Statesmanship becomes a
mere pigmy. Davis is a man of ripe,
mature judgment, whilst Grant of all
men living is ns much the creature of
chance as it is possible to conceive.—
llis promotion and success during the
war and his elevation to the Presiden
cy must both alike he sources of amaze
ment to him. During the war the
Federal Government having the whole
world to draw upon for men and means
was lavish in its expenditures of both.
• Men placed under his command were
slaughtered by thousands and tens of
thousands by this great Northwestern
Butcher, and the lives of his soldiers
were not to He regarded when by sac
rificing them fame would result to this
modern chieftain.
•'How ninny millions died
That Cie-ar might bn great!”
We hope The Cincinnati Convention
may be harmonious and its action un
disturbed; but wo have seen it stated
tiiat the friends of Grant will try to |
take possession of it by presenting
themselves in the guise of sympathi- i
rers in its plans and purposes. In |
this wo trust they maybe foiled.— i
"To be forewarned is to be torcnrm
«d,” and we hope they may be kept
r ftf arms length and all of their tnaelii
.j auons thwarted. The policy of the
Jomocratic party should be to stand
nloof and forin no “cn tangling alliau- (
res” with any organization. 'Mew is- j
sues may spring; ujp during the nest
few months. and fh<' idea should be to
hold their own Convention and if the
prospect for electing men of their own
party is not propitious, then be left
free f„ act with whatever parry whose
nominees and platform may be least
objectionable a. 1 offering the best
prospect for the defeat of Grant.

made up of men more liberal than
Taxpayer shows a disposition to be.
It is true the business those officers
do where individuals pay the fees are
liberal enough for the amount of work
i done, but there is so much for which
1 there are no fees or if any who are
they to come out of, unless we should
have Grand Juries with hearts big
enough to recommend them paid for
their services '(
As to the digging down'the hill near
J. T. lliißiiltons, the Grand Juiors
living west of Taylor’s Ilidge of course
knew hut little about it but were will
ing to take the statements of the tax
payers living in that neighborhood,
arid as they pay their prorata of the
county tax, they are entitled to their
share of the public improvements at a
reasonable cost if it be of public util
ity. Taxpayer also asks for a tabular
statement of the receipts and expen
ditures of the public punds.
That I will not undertake to give at
present; it would require too much
space in your columns; and then the
Books are not convenient to do so,
but for Taxpayers special benefit 1
will tell him where he can go and get
it. If you will go to the county
Treasurer’s book you will there find
where every dollar of the public mon

as to the authority fur paying it out, go
to the Ordinary's office there you can
find the original orders their numbers

account or in the order.
It it true taxes have been high and
it has taken a greatdeal of money to
defray county expences since the close
of the war from the fact it left us
without a Jail and without Bridges,
tlie Courthouse in bad repair. Now
we havo a good Jail, our Bridges will
compare with any in Cherokea Gn.,
and that at a cost from 25 to 4'J per
cent less than some of our neighbor
counties Bridges have cost them, but
still they have cost us a considerable
amount of money. 1 notice in the
general presentments from other
counties the Grand Juries recommend
their officers be paid from $l5O to

$25 per month. What do you sup

Letter From Arkansas.
We are under obligations to a friend
who has kindly permitted us to take
the following extracts from a letter of
a Georgian who is now residing in
Arkansas. We shall continue to pub
lish letters occasionally from the dif
ferent States and Territories and hope
they may always be acceptable to our
readers:
Gti.EE> - County Arkansas, 1
April 9th IST2. (
Tfell, you wished me to give you a
full account of Arkansas, together
with the news generally. In the first
place 1 believe it to be the best farm
ing country l ever saw, so far as the
fertility of the soil is concerned.—
Like all other countries Arkansas has
iis disadvantage*, the water is not
good, nor i.s it easily obtained by dig
ging only in certain localities though
1 find some gi><> 1 wolf on the Craw
ly’s lii.igc and some fine springs of
pure and well tasted water. The peo
ple generally use branch and creek
water winter and summer. This win-
ter, owing to the long drought, water
was very scarce, the watercourse be
ing dried up water was only found in
deep holes where the creeks had once
been, and they were frozen over 1 or
5 inches thick ; we had to use axes
and other heavy tools to get to the
water, and. when we got it, it was the
most horrid of all borrids, thick with
mud of the most noxious character;
this was the best we could do, and it
fad to be brought from one-half to
lb. ec-feurths ot a mile. Perhaps you
woulJ "ish to know something of the
flavor oi this beverage thus obtained.
Were 1 to remind you of the Dutch
man's Salvador, (lager beer) the com
ponant parts of which 1 have though)
were the essence o. 1 moccasin snakes
old boot legs, and worn out saddle
pads, it would be a faint idea to con
vey to your mind the reputs ve sensa

and as filthy as Mew England Hum

oat-, it is not so good for wheat,—
La.el sells from 2j to 10 dollars per
, acre. The country is very thickly
i settled and every family owns land
i renters and hirelings are not to be
: found here. It is tile best poor man's
I country i ever saw. I would advise
ail poor [people who have no land, no
line horses r no fat hogs, no large milch
cows, and no large cribs of corn, to
come to this country by all means—
but, with due respect to the Radical
persuasion, we do not solicit that ele
ment to move here. Jhat wonderful
disaffcctaut, the Hromo Chlorealum,
has done wonders for this country—l
don't mean the Ku Klux, for 1 am op
posed to the organization, if there is
any such tiling. Out of a population
of 2,500 souls in this county (Green)
there are only about 50 Radicals and
about 20 or 25 negroes, or in other
words, colored persons of African e.v
tract. Thus you see that portion of
the homo geni family who do no re
sist the insidious approaches and gol
den arguments of the disciples of
fraud in this part of the fctute seek a
more congenial clime.
We arc in great need of Railroads,
but it will not be a great while until
Arkansas will not be behind any of
the Southern States in regard to fa
cilities of that character. The Union
Pacific Railroad will be the means of
securing to us two additional lines, a
Northern and a Southern. We need
them to develop the vast mining and
farming regions now lying idle, and
to put a final end to the Indian troub 1
les, and to enable us to command that
vast commerce of the East for which
all theuations are striving. The Cairo
and Fulton Railroad will be completed
by next fail, it will pass within 15
miles of us and will be of incalculable
advantage to this part of the country.
The Iron Mountain k Helena Rail
road, running up Crawley’s ltidge to
Poplar Bluff on the St Francis river,
is graded to Forrest City, at which
place it intersects the Memphis & Lit
tle Rock Railroad. Arkansas, with
the facility of Railroads, the fertility
of the soil, and the industry of its
citizens will soon stand preeminent on
the list of Southern States, and in
stead of Hog and Hominy being eio
graven on her national escutcheon, as
some have suggested, it should be />/'*'-
tints enter pares , prindpia unit homi
nes. The people of some of the older
States have formed a wrong opinion
of the society of Arkansas, especially
Alabama, which, with her iron, social
and spiritual limitations, would seem
the last place on earth to judge of
moral, mental and religious endow
ments. I find the people here hos
pitable and kind, and in their manners
mild and courteous, ond generally in
telligent and reliable. * * *
In New Haven, a gentleman recent
ly visited a young lady, staying rather
late, and being fearful of disturbing
the family, took oil his shoes and went
to the front door in his stocking feet.
Just us she emerged from the door,
with shoes in hand, he was seized by a
policeman, and it was with considera
ble difficulty that he and the lady to
gether could convince that functionary
that he was not a proper caudidate
for the lockup.
Later accounts from the City of
Mexico said that the cause of the rev
olutionists is considered boneless, but
that terrible anarchy exists throughout
the country. 'l’ll-'resolution proposal
in the Congress of the United States,
looking to a protectorate for Mexico,
created li-i sensation, but it is asserted
that’ the foreigners and most respecta
ble nations desire that or annexation.
Nothing makes a man so miserable
as having nothing to do. Mo men are
more to he pitied than those who have
their time on their bands, and no em
ployment.
A policeman, fond of reading, totP
a friend that, fur amusement when off
duty, he osten "took up” a book.
