in the right spirit, we publish below
interesting sta'isties furnished us by
Lijor ( Inpley, the efficient Secretary
and Treasurer of the N. k S. Road:
The Company was organized on the
11th of August 1B71; there is now
•and) miles graded, iron for 25 miles and
1 1 laid and cars running on the same.
Cross ties on 20 miles, 100 miles sur
veyed and 75 In. ated. 65 mils get
ting cross ties, 70 laying track and
500 grading. This is decidedly a
creditable exhibit, and shows it has
been under proper management and
that its Board of Directors are men
of indomitable energy. The finances
of tlie Company have boon managed
well and the future of the North k
South is every way promising.

Nome two months ago Air. Greeley
called the attention af Air. Gcri-it Smith
to the fact that many of the Kn-Klux
prisoners confined at Albany were
deserving of the interposition of Ex

some of'tln-se poor creatures were so
grossly ignorant, that others were too
young to comprehend the nature of
the fearful o' bg ions which they had
assumed, and that others had undoub

the case lor !iuusoif, and use his in-
fluence with t.ue President, with whom
ids relations were cordially close, i-i

the affair, but -raid lie was doubtful
if the President would he induced, in
the midst of a heated campaign, to
take steps for tbs re!m e of any of
the prisoners, as it might injure- bis
political prospects. The result of nie
examination by Air. Gerrit Smith, and
his subsequent report to the Presi

was that Col. Whittle’ of the United

to make an official examination, ills
