Soil Conservation Activities
By TOM COLE
DECEMBER - 1967 finds
many farmers and land
owners trying to apply and
maintain soil and water con
servation practices on their
lands as planned in coopera
tion with the Upper Oc
mulgee River District.
Perry D. Walker, Jr.,
smooths and removes ob
stacles from five acres on his
farm located on the Walt
Stephens Road. This field is
adjoining a stream and is
planned for tall fescue and
clover pasture.
J. William Turnipseed has
removed obstacles, bladed
down bench type terraces
and smoothed a three acre
field prior to planting to
fescue-clover pasture. Two
acres of this area are lo
cated on bottom land with a
water table nearer the sur
face than upland. Deep
rooted fescue and perennial
white clover will continue to
make good growth during
hot, dry summer months on
bottom land as compared to
upland.
Noticed recently a field on
the farm of W. T. and Wil
liam W. Camp that is
planted to small grain that
is growing with a good
stand near Mundy’s Mill on
Fayetteville Highway (Ga.-
54). There was an old road
bed that divided this field,
which was abandoned when
Mundy’s Mill Road was
straightened. Mr. Camp
shaped the backslopes along
this road seeding it to fes-

Nobody, but nobody, has a range
that thinks. But thinking women
are switching to electric cooking.
With today’s amazing technology, you’d think
there’d be a range that does everything.
Courage! An electric range comes very close.
However, you still must plan the meals and
do the bossing.
Now, bossing here simply means setting the
controls on your electric range. Then the range
takes over.
It perks your coffee before you get up. Buzzes
you when the tempting roast is done. With an
automatic time clock, your electric oven cooks
meals while you’re out of the kitchen, out of
the house. Some surface units stir sauces and
gravies, automatically. In many models, ovens
clean themselves.
And you know' flameless electric ranges cook
the cleanest, quickest, coolest way possible.
Think on all those advantages. And you’ll
cook on a modern electric range.

cue clover and sericia les
pedeza in 1965. Mulch was
applied on the steep areas
and places where all topsoil
removed. He mowed this
area recenty leaving a good
green stand of fescue-clover
which will stay green all
winter. Soil loss to erosion
has been reduced to a small
percentage.
R. O. White reports he got
a “Good Kill” from weeding
by chemicals of cull bushes
and undesirable hardwoods
in a five-acre tract of his
farm located on Jodeco Road
near Jonesboro. This was
done last summer by the
Georgia Forestry Commis
sion with a tractor and
pump built for this purpose.
After spraying, Mr. White
deadened larger trees that
were retarding growth of
young pines by knotching
and applying chemicals.

Key Club Venture
No Smoking Week
At Jonesboro High
Jonesboro High School
students were smoking less
and enjoying it more with
the advent of No Smoking
Week launched last Friday
by the school’s Key Club,
which is sponsored by the
Kiwanis Club.
The student body of 1,700
turned out almost en masse
in the gym at 2 o’clock to
hear more of the evils of the
“filthy weed’’ and to pledge
to make this a smokeless
week. Key Club president
Steve Roberts was the emcee
of a program that is destined
to reach state-wide with a
meeting of all Georgia Key
Clubs having been called for
Jan. 6 at Jonesboro School.
At that time emphasis will
be on tabooing tobacco and
alcohol and improving
health. Three delegates each
have been invited from Geor
gia’s 154 key clubs.
This is in line with Gov.
Maddox’s announced Youth
Council program and Jones
