Smith Hardware and Supply Co. opened In April of 1947 at
1096 Main Street In the building that Marlon McKown had ju’st
completed. Tills was a partnership between George M. "Mike”
Smltii and J. W. Smith. With Mike as the Manager, Bookeeper,
and Janitor, he was the only paid employee. The wives of these
men, Pauline and Estelle, helped out at times. J. W. helped
on Saturday afternoon after working five and a half days at
his regular Job with Beck and Gregg Hardware in Atlanta.
Forest Park was growing, and the people were kind to Smith
Hardware. So it continued to grow, and in January of 1953,
they moved to a new and larger building at 1210 Main Street.
This building was built by the late Billy Nolan and leased to
the Smith boys. In 1949, a younger brother Bill Smith had
joined the organization, and three years later, in 1952, J. W.
resigned his position with Beck and Gregg to devote full time
to Smith Hardware Company. The three brothers then formed
a corporation and continued to expand. In 1966, a new two
story building was erected at 858 Main Street to be the new
home of Smith Hardware & Supply Co., Inc.
The company now employs eight regular salesmen and seven
part time. These men are experienced hardware men, and
some have been with Smith Hardware Co. since 1953. In fact,
the management says that they have the best organization they
know of anywhere. They use the slogan "Hardware Specialists”
and try to live up to it.
These three brothers are products of Clayton County. They
are the sons of the late J. E. Smith, Sr. and Mrs. Annie H. Smith,
who resides at South Avenue in Forest Park. Mrs. Annies H.
Smith is 83 years young and is still keeping house.
All three brothers are Methodists and attend Jones Memorial
Methodist Church. They are active in local, civic, and govern
mental affairs.
Someone asked how they shared the responsibility of operating
the store. They replied that Mike was Bookkeeper and Office
manager; Billy did the buying and merchandising; and J.W. was
Personnel manager and "General flunkle.”

Center For Clayton County
(FINAL OF THREE PART SERIES)
Now we have completed our
tour of the first floor, so we
take the elevator to the ground
floor (basement). Getting off
the elevator we are located In
the center of the building. To
the left (soutli) are the areas
for shop, maintenance, tele
phone room, storage for
records and supplies. Direct
ly across from the elevators,
(west) are the boiler rooms.
In the boiler room are two
large boilers, operated with
gas. We do have large tanks
of oil stored In the ground
and can change to fuel oil In a
mattei' of minutes In the event
of interruption of the gas supply.
Here also is the large emer
gency power generator that can
take over and supply electricity
to critical areas in case of
failure of the primary source
of elect ricity.
Adjacent to the boiler room
is the laundry. We will do
about one and one-half tons of
laundry each working day.
Having arrived back at the
elevator in which we descended
to the ground floor, we move
north and see the central ster
ilizing room and special equip
ment storage areas on the left.
Here medical and surgical sup
plies are sterilized, packaged
and serviced for use in all areas
of the hospital. A dumbwait
er transports these supplies to
tiie nursing units above.
On the other side of the cor
ridor Is the large kitchen and
dining areas. Feeding an aver
age of 140 patients in bed three
times a day is an enormous
task. Another 100 personnel
are fed in the cafeteria each

In a round about way we find
ourselves back at the elevators
again. But before we leave tills

the corridor again and turn left
into the supply and purchasing
area.
A hospital will buy as many
as 8,000 different items of sup

will carry an Inventory valued at
approximately $25,000.
To get to the ground floor of
the mental health wing (north
west) we go out the back en

on the ground floor. Here we
find the workings of the county
health department. The areas
included are waiting spaces,
offices, examinations rooms,
research and education areas,
room for group and individual
therapy, library and conference
space.
We have completed our tour of
