THE UNIVERSITY.
We have read with care the letter of
Prof. Orr on the subject of the Univer
sity, and we think the plan therein sug
gepted not only practical, but eminently
desirable.
It is really refreshing after the col
umns upon columns of brainless fault
finding which have flooded the State
from anonymous scribblers, to read a
well digetted, common-sense letter like
that of Prof. Orr. We are glad the
Trustets will have mapped out for
them by O' 6 learned School Commis
sioner a plan which they may so prop
eily take as a basis. We have uo in
teution of attacking a body of men so
eminently capacitated to decide any
and all questions as is the Board of
Trustees of the University. There is
not a more capable body of men any
where. This is, indeed, one of the
troubles— they are too great! They
have other affairs which occupy their
‘whole time and attention, so that they
come here filled with thoughts of their
railroads, their politics, or their preach
ing. and are not properly prepared to
plan for the benefit of the institution.
This being the case, it was meet and
proper that the School Commissioner,
whose whole time end thought is de
voted to the etudyjif the most proper
means of cducatmg the-youth "of the
State, should submit, for their consid
eration, a plan whereby the people of
■'the State may have their confidence iu
the University restored.
It remains to lie seen wnetber the
Mreatness of the Trustees will allow
them to I s en to the words of wisdom
which Prof. Orr has uttered.
We do not think tuition should be
free; we think it should be very small,
however, say twenty five dollars a year.
This would, with three or four hundred
students, add very materially to the al
ready large income of t wenty-nine thou
sand dollars. We think, too, that there
should bo about twelve teachers, ten
full professors and two tutors. This
number will give greater chance for
professors to make specialties of their
departments. Right here we suggest
with no desire to call attention to any
professor, that the faculty be carefully
managed, and prrsanal fiiendsaip sat
aside in so doing. It is thought some
deja tments are too full, aofl others
‘ly neglected. Will not the local
... , res speak up in this mdtterf They
■“ 7 "t i> mod as to its truth,
rue {•;
We think, too, Dr. Orr'splan forgiv
ing the boys cheap, good board, is
most admirable, ft is a new one to us,
but among all the plans which have
been proposed, this is the best which
has come to our knowledge. It shows,
as does the whole letter, a profound
study of the subject and a full and ac
curate knowledge of the necessities of
the University. We feel, when we sug
gest that personal friendship be laid
aside, and the good of the youth of our
State consulted in the selection of the
Faculty as if we were a knot on an ox’s
horn; but, nevertheless, we do so sug
gest to the learned and wise Board of
Trustees. If your friendship influences
you in choosing professors, gentlemen,
you are in honor bound to resign. If
you prefer another college, gentleman,
you are in honor bound to resign. The
good Book says “you cannot serve two
masters."
