The Picnic.
It has been announced through the pa
pers for more than a month that there was
to he a great union picnic at the Blue
Spring, in this courtly, on Tuesday the
18th inst Wo understood that Thomns
ville, Quitman and Valdosta were, to unite
and have one picnic that was to be a social
union of the three towns, and we under
stood that the people of the three counties
were invited and the people no understood
it. Many came in carriages, buggies, wag
ons, oil horse back and a foot, and tin'
trains from erfcli end of the rend was pack
ed and crowded with old mid young, males
and females, so that the whole face of the
earth around and about the Spring was
almost covered with living moving beings,
but they wouldn't unite worth a cent.—
They wouldn't mix any more than oil and
water there is no affinity. The lines of
distinction were drawn at the beginning
nud kept up through the day. Wo expec
ted at dinner time to see all the baskets
brought to one place and scattered out on
white cloths and everybody invited to
come and partake of a common feast.
Borne of our folks proposed it, but it was
resisted r.ud so they scattered out in dif
ferent directions in little groups and sel
fishly did eat. Now, why would they not
unite and be as oue people for one day.—
Our private opinion is that it is for the
want of sense, for if either party claims a
superiority on account of location, it is the
highest evidence of insanity, and if either
party feels an inferiority it is a shameful
weakness. We believe that our people
were ready and willing to enter into a so
cial union with the people of Thomas and
Loundes, but they hud too much self-res
pect to condescend to sycophantcy. The
young men of Brooks and Loundes were
and always are social and genial with each
other, but the ladies from some causo or
wither, with a few exceptions, kept aloof, so
it was with the ladies of Thomasville. Now,
we think that people living in these little
lowus had better come to the wise concln
iSon that towns give no superiority to cit
izens over citizens of other towns or coun
try people, and when they get in their lit
tle heads brains enough to dicover this one
fact, we will be pleased to advertise anoth
er union picnic at the Blue Spring. We
Bad every facility for enjoyment and pleas
ure, with one exception, and that was
brains.

Fine Painting.
Mr. E. L. Smith, of Richmond, Vir
ginia, has located in our town. Ho is a
mechanic of the first water, his painting so
far as tested in this place excells anything
of the kind ever done in South Georgia.
He does all kinds of painting in the best
style; but marbleizing, graining and
sign painting are specialities with him. He
will promptly attend to all orders from
any section of the country. Give him an

The 1 1 it tls Con volition,
In Secret Session- Griffin, Chairman
Moses Knight, Principal Taikcst--
“Jode" Smith, The Negroes
Equal, Nominated for the
Senate.
And it, came to puss on the 19th day of
the Btli month of the year, 1874, that the
tint nosed and tiro thick liped came to wor
ship iu the Radical Synagogue, with closed
doors; and ou the same day thereof, one
Samuel, an high priest, came preaching
Civil Rights and Social Equality,
saying: beloved, thou art pure iu my
sight, for thou hast been uuuoint
ed, and your sweet odors are p reeious
to my nostrils; and I say unto you, except
you bo faithful, ye can iu no wise outer
into hotels, steam boats apd railroad ears,
nor can you enjoy the benefit of public
schools. And I say unto you, that there
is one Joseph, of Thomasville, son of oue
Milton, formerly a minister of the Gospel,
who became an high priest of Radicalism,
and claims to be the Moses who delivered
tho Etheopinns from bondage, and now
proposes to lead them to his parlor, to liis
table and to his bed. But Milton, by rea
son of his strong drink and love of office
and deceitful pretences tor the love of ne
gro, has turned his garments wrong side
out, exhibiting his hidden corruption and
the long pent up deceitfnlnesa of his heart
with all of its native degrading instincts.
Jode, true to the instincts of his illustrious
exemplar, recognizes tho equality of the
negro and regards them as fit companions .
and associates, good enough to eat at his
table, sleep in liis beds and marry in his
family.
Rut in secret the meeting was held,
none but Etheopinns, Samuel and one
Edward C., who was the chief scribe we
presume. We have heard that Samuel was
Chairman and that Moses Knight was very
loquatious. We have learned what they
did, but will probably never know how
they did it. Jode, son of Milton, was
nominated for tho Senate as tho civil
rights candidate; churning to be the proud !
equal of any negro. Now, Jode, we say to
you that your defeat is inevitable, and you
will no longer be regarded as tho equal of !
white gentlemen, and social ostracism will (
he the conseqneueoof your perfidious cou- 1
duet. Now, Jode, you know that every
decent while loan in tho District has a
higher respect for the negro than you
have. The Democrats respects them in
their proper sphere; deals honestly with
them, and never attempts to deceive them, j
They give homes and employment and
furnish them food and raiment. I lan you
make them such promises and verify them ?
You know you are false to them when you
| promise to use your influence in favor of
j civil rights. You know you can not aid
I in the passage of the hill, and will have no
more influence than the meanest negro in
l the District, whieh wo are perfectly will
j iug to concede is your equal as you claim

THAT GHOST IN HMJTIIFMiIiD.
j Moat oar older town people will ro
I member old Doctor 1).
lit 1 was noted for two things; ho was re
markably plain spoken, and was reputed
to h. vc loured nothing above or anything
|la ucutn. There was but one tiling on
earth that he did fear—that was his wife;
and when at home ho usually retired to
his study, or somewhere beyond the sound
of her tongue. He had boon heard to re
mark that “if it took but one iil> to make
woman of, that rib must have been n
j compound of vinegar, red-pepper and
i guupowder.”
i Not far from tho Doctor’s residence
j were some young fellows of the baser sort,
! who thought they would put the Doctor’s
I nerves to a test. After much deliberation
: they Lit upon the plan of playing ghost.
Accordingly one evening they sailed forth,
! provided with a sheet, while oue of their
j number went to the Doctor’s house and
| told him that a certain person, living on
j the other side of a thick wood, was sick
; and needed his attendance.
The Doctor immediately repaired to the
| barn, harnessed the old mare, and
l started on liis errand of mercy.
! It was all well until he arrived at the
j middle of the wood, when the mare sud
j denly stopped and showed unmistakable
i -signs of fear. The Doctor very naturally
looked around to see what was the matter,
and right in front of him beheld a verita
ble ghost! He tried to coax and to compel
his mar© to go on. but all to no purpose,
i This rouped the Doctor’s ire; he jumped
I out and started for the ghost, and when
i within ten feet of it lie paused to deliver
; the following speech:
“If you are a ghost, I can lick you; but
if you arc the devil, I know you won’t
j touch me, for I married your sister.”
The “ghost” decamped with a snppress
| ed snicker. \V. T.

Paper flour - barrels are being made in
lowa. Tlrey are said to Ire air tight and
water-proof, to weigh much lefts than the
ordinary wooden barrels, and to be able to
stand more rough usage. One of the
manufacturers predicts that in five years
every barrel of Western flour will be sent
East in barrels made from the straw the
wheat grew on. What next will be made of
paper ? Already car-wheels, household
artieals, wearing apparel and many other
things are made of paper, And now, after
tiio flour is made from the wheat, the straw
iis taken and paper made which is used
| for making flour barrels. This is the age
I of invention and progress.
