fJisii, at Ms rosiileijfco, iif.M,uUsfiD enmi

HrxKS. in tlie filth year of his age.
For the wil>ject of this sketch, wo onu |
claim !>ut a short acquaintance, anil while
others knew him longer, we b. lieve none I
knew him better or lovetl liim more for his j
sterling virtues anil genial characteristics
I)r. Hines was horn in Effingham comi
ty, Georgia, December 25tU, 1811. anil the ;
day of liis birth was tlie day of his moth- ;
er’s death; ninl in his helpless and innocent
infancy, lie became tlie charge of his
grandmother, who instilled into his 3011th
fill iniiul such virtues ns eharaetevjzed his
entire life anil won for him the confidence |
of all who knew him.
When lint a youth, lie was thrown upon
his own resources to liattle with the tide
of time and shape his own destiny.—
His first ennobling object was to cultivate
die ini ml with which nature hail so pre
eminently endowed him, mid for that per- '
pose lie labored and studied until he tv.is
qualified to commence the f \;dy of 1 „
profession, which, b” his iiiA jaUgable
energy, he r h ied. T l„3i he was uni
ted in ....ring ..an Miss Julia Christian,
c.. Monroe con. tv. There he commenced
-.id continued the practice of his profes
sion for ab ait. three years, and then re
moved to Tronpvilie, the then county site
of Lou-,ids. mid there engaged in (he prac
tice of his profession in connection with
Dr. Henry liriggs, which connection con
tinued for one .VciiV ; after which he pur
chased his beautiful homo in Madison
ontiu'y, Florida, at which he lived until
Ills d.-alli t in l!od of over thirty yi-Srs
oil of iWiieli time, with lUv i-\eeptioii of
the Inst tin 1 years, lie did the most e*fen
iw pmetiee of any j ! ysieian in Middle
Florida, or Southern Georgia, lit was the
rich man’s favorite I 1 3 sieiau, Iho pool
iinin's friendly physician For more than
thirty years he traveled far and wide,
tliioiigh cold and In at, wet and dry, day
and night, to relieve snfi’eriug humanity.
It was not only the confidence of the en
tire community as a physician that lie en
joyed, blit such was the uprightness of his
dealings with all men. ns to win universal
confidence in his virtues. Kneh was hiv
chnructer for lionestv, energy an 1 prompt
ness, that he was always chosen to settle;
the largest estates, both in his own county
and in this comity ; and n it one word of:
complaint lias ever been urged.
He raised n large family - , all of whom !
enjoyed high educational advantages. Five
preceded him to the Hummer Land, two I
of whom were soldier boys. Five, with
their mother, sur.ive him, sadly bereaved,
to mourn their irreparable loss. Asa hus
baud, lie was so devoted ; as n father, bo
generous and iudolgcut ; as a neighbor, so !
hospitable and kind ; as a fiieud, so trusty
ami true. His bounties, the fruits of his
own energy and exertion, were never
withheld from suffering humanity. His
house was the home for the stranger—no
Lazarus ever lay at his gate unattended.
He was a member of the Methodist Epis
copal Churoh for more than thirty years,
and although his arduous labors prevented
his regular attendance upon the church,
his life and character as a Christian gentle
man was unexceptionable. For some two
years previous to his dissolution, he- was
greatly afflicted, doubtless the result of
his many years of labor and exposure to
the malarious atmosphere through which
he had to travel. But his afflictions be
lnire with patience and Christian fortitude.
But a few days before bis death, so flatter
ing and deceptive was his disease, that Ids
family was encouraged with the hope that
he was going to lie almost entirely restored
to health. His disease returned in a more
Violent form, and ill a few hours bright
hopes were crush?!! forever. And the grave
has silenced forever his pleasant utterances
and stilled the noble heart that ever beat
responsive to the culls of friendship, duty
and wffection. All who knew him can in
some degree estimate his loss to liisfamily,
and all sympathize with them in this their
sad hour of bereavement. And now, while
wo bid a final farewell to our friend, we
pray God to soothe and comfort his sor
rowing family.

On M'edriesilfy ffioTinlig, hs one of two
young men, (who hud come to our town to
make oiic of ns.j happened into the store
of Briggs, Jelks it Cos., our benign and
watchful Marshal, who is always hanging
off, approached him, and in the blandest
nfiunef - , said : “Young man, I have seen
you in our town for several days, and have
formed quite an opinion of you. and would
like to know your name, as also that of
your friend." The young man replied by
giving liis surname. But tlutt Would l>y
110 means satisfy our Marshal—-he asked in
the most agreeable way, with Ilia face lit
erally shingled over with smil ;s, their first,
second, third and fourth names in full, if
they chanced to have so many. After be
ing told their names, he turned down the
lapel of his coat, exposing to full view a
star, which went to Show that he was the
Marshal, deliberately took paper and
pencil from his pocket, wrote the follow
ing, and, iu the most independent auil im
portant air possible for a man to assume,
handed it to him :
You are hereby notified, leaving all oth- i
er business aside, to be and appear at the :
Court ibmse, iu the bnVii of Quitman, on I
the 23th day of March next, 1875, at 7

suitable implement, to work the streets of
the town, according to law.

The last we saw of these two young men
they were packing their valises preparatory
to “ vamosing the rancho,” having failed
to raise three dollars, with w icb to buy a
substitute, anil being too lazy to work
themselves.

Sheriff Lnk", of Thomas county, arrest
ed a white negro with civil rights proclivi
ties and social equality inclination, under
the charge of counterfeiting the United
States currency, and brought him, on
Wednesday, 24th instant, before Commis
j sioner Wade, for an investigation of the
! charges. He plead guilty, and was com
i mitted to await his trial in the Federal
1 Court,.
We learn that the money he passed was
Confederate bills, painted green. If this
lie true, it is not counterfeit ng, and the
Federal Court has no jurisdiction; but, lie
j might be indicted in the State Court for
! cheating and swindling, and oiigljt to be
punished to the extent of the law.
