'Twos soft, still night, and the moon
Shone bright, and, our beautiful village
was it* silent as th# tity of the dead. Mor-
Jfheus had claimed Ills victim*, and in his
Soft and geuialVunbi-aco was bearing them
through theYidcunr-emblem of death. It
Was too lute and too early for the native
sougsters, with their sweet wnrblings, to,
break the sill dime .offence. The moon,
beautiful moon, woa undisturbed and un- 1
obscured iu her majesty.
And her soft sheens lay here and there,
Like wasted sunbeams.
When beneath the window of his dul
cinen, the solemn silence was broken by
one lieu O—K., when he Rung the follow
ing stanzas to his guitar accompaniment:
Bex ().—K.
Open thy lattice, 0 lndv bright!
The cartli ties calm in thc fcir moonlight;
Itaze on the gliut of each glancing alar,
And list to tlie notes of my soft guitar.
At the lady's window a vision shone—
’Twas the lady's head, with a night-cap on.

With lily finger* she hides her brew.
Oh, wwp not though hitter thy kojptowh arc,
I will siKithe them to rest with my soft guitar.
Then the ’ad.v answered, ‘‘Who's going to weep?
Go 'way with your Addle and let me* sleep.”
Bex O.—K.
(Sfldtle/tod, hut stiff hopffid)
Then sloop, dear lady: thy fringed lids close,
Pinions of eberuhim fan thy re pose,
While through thy casement, slightly njsr,
Steal the sweet note* of my soft guitar.
Then the lady her “secret pain” confessed
With the pi i .tiff murmur, “Oh, give us n rest!” 1
Bus O.—K. % • *
(Slif/Jult/ I)i*courageii. )
Chide me not handily, O lady fair!
Bond from thr lattice, and hear my prayer.
Sighing f t r'uec, 1 Wonder afar,
Mournfully toughing my soft guitar.
And the lady ahaVered: “ You stujrid thing.

Ksthau,
••Thoa art the man” that has purchased
nnd received iu store one of the largest
stocks of general merchandise in our town.
And while it is due to Cassar to render
unto him the things that fire his, it is
equally due to Natlmn to render unto him
the things that aro his. It is well known
to our render*, thnt > Mr, .Nathan Oazan
nnd us for a long time were not friends.
What we said of him, we did it believing
it our duty, or, ftt least, a right, in the ex
ercise of lnch we were justifiable, ttie
facts m they were presented to 11s, consid
ered, And now, it is duo to him to state
that liis explanations and establishment of
truths, conclusively convince us, that the
.information wa iScfed upon was not correct;
that it was a misunderstanding on the part
of oar informants, nnd, as we published
facts calculated in their tendency to do
him an injury, it is due to us ami from us,
with satisfactory evidence that he was in
nocent of the charge, to establish that in
noceuce before the people. We have
watched him for some months, and also
bis clerks, in tlieir dealings with negroes,
fnlly determined, if we discovered any
frauds, to expose them, but we have seen
nothing but fair dealing. His stock of
goods, which he now offers, is large and
varied, and certainly well selected. His
stock of white goods is large, consisting of
piques, Victoria lawns, nansooks, jacon
etts, Swiss muslins, oambricks, and, in
fact, everything that is erobraoed in a gen
eral stock of goods; and, as a specialty, he
offers Gazan’s oolebrated Ladies' and Chil
dren's Shoes. We think the ladies would
find it to their interest to call and examine
his stock. Refer to his liberal advertise
ment in another place.
The working of the streets in the suburbs
of the city, which have been well-nigh im
passable for some time, the remiltof washes
occasioned by the rains which we have had
almost incessantly during this year, has
been going on nnder the immediate super
vision of Mr. if- T. Thrasher, City Marshal,
and tk* Street Committee, for the past few
days.
K ayton’s Monthly Effusion is called
‘ ‘ The Brinks County Gem, ” and will be
published every twenty-eight days. Com
mencing, ns it did, iu the wane of the
moon, it will generally appear during its
dark seasons, unless some temperamental
transition, unforeseen and unexpected,
should iuterpose and cause a cessation or
suspension. We never knew of the exist
ence of a publishing Company in Brooks
county known as the Gem nutil the first
child was bom. It is doubtless of honest
parentage, but strangely and singularly
obscure. L. F. Haddock is said to bo the
editor, but he is not reported ns a member
of this brilliantly named company. It is
to have a free circulation, and is evidently
intended to give especial noloriety to one
or two branches of business, because it
will be seen from the phraseology of the
salutatory that competing advertising will
not he allowed. And we are inclined to
think that a party who cannot compete iu
trade with others by advertising in one or
both of the papers iu our towj), will not
succeed to a very great extent by blowing
a little horn of his own. The mechanical
get up of the paper is excellent. It is done
at the Reporter office, where they are well
-ptepared to do such work in good style,
and, indeed, we have no objection to the
little thing iu any respect, but we are fully
satisfied that it is gotten np for selfish pur
poses, and not for the general good.
Why ia It
that when Jacob Daunt gets a little fretted
uiit der becples, he goes right slitroit avay
and pys very much goods, Jacob has just
returned from the eastern cities, where he
laid in a very large supply of spring and
summer goods. He was one of the tirst
settlers of this town. He has grown with
its growth and strengthened with its
strength, and perhaps there is not a mer
chant in the place more familiar with the
wants and tastes of the people, anti conse
quently his selections are made with a
view to or rather a knowledge of the wants
of his customers. He has established a
reputation for honest dealing, which tins
secured to him not only a large trade, blit
the confidence of the peo pie.
A< rtoEXT.—Mr. Green, the job-printer
of the Reporter office, while running off
a job on one of Gordon's presses, whs made
the victim to quite a serious acceident a
few days ago. In feeding, it stems lie was
rather slow in removing his band from the j
press, and it was caught and crushed badly.
.Mr. Green is a flue young man, and we
are pained to hear of this accident. \\ e
would warn him to be more cart ful iu the ;
future, as such accidents ure not only pain
ful to bear, but they tend to make a relig
iously-inclined man a sinful one, ns, unless
he has mighty good control of his tongue, j
lie is apt to blurt out ‘'seiz/ers and jees
wax.” or some other cuss-word, when the
mushing begins.
Attention
is invited to the advertisement of E. T. ,
Unites A- Bro,, who have now on hand n
•lew and splendid stock of general mer
chandise, eouHi-tiug if dry goods, ready
made clothing, lints, caps, boots, shoes,
etc., etc., together with n splendid assort
ment of heavy and fancy groceries.
Tln-n" young gentlemen are, rapidly win
ning the confidence of the people, and are
building np a fine trade. Call and exam
ine their stock.
The cold, rainy and disagreeable weather
that characterized the past two months has
passed away end given place to the ap
proach of April, which brings along with
it balmy days anil delightfully pleasant
nights, holding cut inducements to the
yo'.ttig ladies for afternoon promenades,
whereby an opportunity is afforded them
of allowing the latest fashions, and giving
the young men a chance to spark them at
night. Ho go in, young men. “Why will
vc doubting .stand ?”
Disou.K-'F-FCL.—Borne of our young men !
aro in the lnihit of indulging in the past
time of jumping npOU the streets on Sun-1
day afternoons. This is disraceful, and j
should be done away with. The breaking
of a limb would be thought little of by the |
indulgers in this wicked sport when com-;
pared to the losing of a boot-heel, and the j
•very first thing they know this sad catas-;
topbe will come to pass. What, then ? I
o
Tie Old Stand by,
D. B. Creech, is not behind his neighbors j
iu his new stock. He can supply his cus
tomers with just wbat they want, at as
cheap rates as any merchant in the place.
It is needless to tell the people who Creech
is. He is well known. His chief religion
is honesty, ami to that extent we believe
he is truly pious. Call on Bob; though
not overly pious, ho will talk religion
fluently and sell you goods free from fraud
or deception. ]

Last Sunday evening, about two o’clock, ;
a destructive fire broke out iu Monticelto, |
Florida, about twenty-five miles south of
here, binning out H. Bernhard, Johnson i
A Bro., S. Buies ton, S. B. Baldwin, Chas. j
Parish and W. D. Saunders, and destroy- j
ing property valued at $50,000, only partly ;
covered by insurance. The fire originated i
in the warehouse of S. B. Baldwin.

Kithurtl U llimwlf Again,
Miv B. M. McCall lias just returned
from the Eastern Markets, where he has
been purchasing a large and elegantly as
sorbed stock of goods. He is ayoungman
of hue taste and fine business qualifica
tions, having had an experience of several
years in a house doing a large business.—
He is perfectly familiar with the quality
of goods suited to the tastes of our people,
and has made his purchase with that view.
This young mau lias started out under
very favorable auspices, and bids fair to
be one of our prominent merchants. We
like to see energetic young men receive
1 encouragement from the people. We are
glad'to say he has scoured it, and is build
ing up a fine trade. He assures us that he
selected his stock with great care, with a
\ view to suit the tastes of bet it ladies and
gentlemen. Give litm a c-all:
