Rain Again.
On Wednesday evening and night, we
had quite u refreshing rain. This, we
think, was very much needed, as the hard
rains recently beat the ground down very
hurd, and tbe incessant winds for the lust
week has baked it so that, cotton planted
just before the rain could not come up,
and that tlmt was tip could not grow. A
few warm days will give to the now droop
iug crops a healthier ami livelier appear
ance. Certainly it will add greatly to tbe
comfort of tbe town, for tbe sand was get
ting very deep, and tbe duet almost unen
durable.
Superior Court.
For the benefit of litigant, jurors and
witnesses, we state that, on Monday, the
31st prox., the Superior Court will be in
session, and under our abominable system
of laws, that e iconruges perjury, we sug
gest the propriety of keeping your facul
ties all right, and your swearing apparatus
in good order—the tallest swearing will
win under the present system. A good man
is unsuspecting and deals fair, and never
thinks of the necessity of a witness; a mean
man never wants a witness, for he knows
at swearing he’s a trump that no man can
beat.
We had hoped that Base Ball would
cease to be the chief amusementof our and
other little towns, and it* childish excite
ments would be forgotten, but some of the
middle-aged children have revived it again,
and now the afternoons are spent in prac
tising either on the grounds or in the
streets batting and catching. Our next
class of sprys spend the afternoons in imi
tating the toad, and some of them can
a toad jumping, especially if the toad
been well-fed on buck-shot; but the
spryett of all the sprys is our foreman, who
imniest the world and the, residue of man
kind as# foot-racer. On Wednesday eve
ning ft Marsha U. not the Marshal, accepted
the proposition, and, the distance being
designated, fjae parties started. Our fore
man took the lead, leaving his competitor
far in the rear, who became disgusted with
himself and gT* op the race. But our
foreman, with hits head thrown back, and
hi* hair s raighteped out like a comet’s
tail, ran the wbojkt duteuee, not doubting
but that his competitor was immediately
in his rear and might pass him, if he should
falter. The distance vm something less
than a mile. Our forgnjau is quite sere,
and walks with measured steps, yet he
boasts of having left bis victim feeling pre
cisely as a cold pancake ‘l nlte mel '
bucholy.
Personal.
On yesterday moruiug we had a cull from
our friend, Mr. T. M. Alleu, whom we re
gard as the best representative of two of
the best houses in Georgia, to-wit: Win
ielbuum & Bio., and Singleton, Hunt &
Cos. The former n dry goods house, and
without doubt doing the largest business
of auy house of the kind in Georgia. This
exteusive and extraordinary business is
done by Waxelbauin & Bro., because they
either import their gooda, or purchase in
large quantities from importers, and not
from Eastern stock jobbers, thereby avoid*
ing the expenses aud profits of at least
one of the middle men, and therefore
they can sell, and do sell as cheap or
cheaper than the jobbers of New York or
Philadelphia, hence it is to the interest of
country merchants to mske. their pur
chases of them. There are no men tliut
stand higher as gentlemen and fair deal
era than Wuxelbuutu A’ Bro. Messrs.
Singleton & Hunt, do u large trade in the
lint and shoe business, aud in their busi
ness have acquired a reputation that other
merchants might properly envy. We would
be glad to know that these gentlemen were
enjoying a large trade from onr section of
Georgia. Their representative, Mr. Alleu,
is well known in Southern Georgia, and
enjoys the full confidence of the people,
and will carry a large trade to these
houses. Neither of these l ouses have
ever patronized us to the amount of one
cent, ami the above statement we make
without fee or reward, or the hope thereof
but we do it to show to the world that an i
editor, under three years old, can tell the
truth without pay. After three years’ ex
perience we are not willing to vouch for
such extraordinary liberality.
