House Warmlns.
On Tuesday night Mr. T. Shandnl and
lady, who had just moved into their new
and elegant residence, gave a party to
which all the citizens were invited. Many
attended; indeed, quite a crowd of ladies
and gentlemen, all of whom to an idle
spectator like us, appeared to "enjoy them
selves to an eminent degree. Two rooms
were occupied by dancers, another was oc
cupied by those fond of other amusements,
cards, etc., etc.j two spacious piazzas were
filled by those who neither duuccd nor
played, for they had neither time nor
space to talk to the ladies. We must say
for Mr. Shandnl that he knows how to
make his friends feel at home. At half
past eleven o’clock supper was announced,
whyro everything that an epicure could
desire was spread out before os in great
abundance, and prepared in the most deli
cate and elegant style. Then it was that
the elegont little hostess displayed her hos
pitality in making every one, feel welcome.
Wines of different kinds, and lemonade
were lavishly distributed, and we all ate
and drank and were satisfied, after which
we wont to our little bed without help.
o
Out on Bull.
J. W. Stulnaker, who has been impris
oned in the Brooks county jail for some
months, in default of bail, is now released
on bond. The offence as charged, was, in
the mind of the Judge who committed
him, of such magnitude that he felt it his
duty to demand a large bond, the amount
we don’t know, but we do know that it was
more than he could find sureties for.
But such has been the rapid decline in his
health that Dr. E. A. Jelks, who has
kindly attended him during his imprison
ment, without any hope of compensation
for his services, gave as his opinion that fur
ther imprisonment would.seriously impair
his health, if not greatly endanger his life.
Upon this representation to his Honor, E.
R. Harden, in the exercise of a humane,
us well as legal discretion, reduced the
bond to such an amount as ho could give,
which he gave on Thursday last, and is
now at liberty. We are in favor of a rigid
| enforcement of the law, but we are glad
j to see noble instincts of humanity
still exists in the breast of our Judge; and
in this we think the act worthy of the
highest commendation, aud all right think
ing men will approve it.
The Virginia Canvass. — The reports
from the Virginia canvass indicate a full
vote and an overwhelming Conservative
triumph, General indignation is felt at the
! insolent attempt of the Administration to
j control the politics of the State and organ
ize there another Louisiana. The feeling
aud the activity of the canvass will proba
bly secure a majority larger than Governor
Walker’s in 1869 for Kemper, the Conser
vative candidate. Colonel Mosby says that.
Kemper and the Conservative ticket will
be elected by from twenty to thirty thou
sand. It is said that if the Conservatives
| carry the Legislature there will be a general
concurrence ih favor of returning the Hon.
R. M. T. Hunter to the United States
Senate.
Early and Davis. —Gen. Jubal A. Early,
! in a letter to the Lynchburg (Va.) liepub
j lican, expresses his doubts as to the gen
uineness of a recently published interview
i between a correspondent and Jell', Davis,in
which Mr. Davis is made to say many in
| discreet and foolish tilings, among others
! a severe criticism of Longstreet. Gen.
i Early says that he was with Mr. Davis at
i the Virginia Springs where the reported
1 interviews occurred, and is on the most
I intimate terms with him but heard no such
i expressions as are attributed to him escape
his lips.
A Lawrence man allows his wife $5 a
week for pin money, with the understand
ing that she should forfeit ten cents for
each absent button, and the same amount
for each cup of poor coffee. This arrange
ment has been going on for two years, and
the day has not yet come when he could
! claim ten cents
A Titusville Justice, sent for to marry a
couple, discovered, just before reaching the
house where the oeremony was to be per
formed, tlmt it stood a few rods v ithin Ve
nango county, in which he had no jurisdic
tion. The wedding party therefore ad
journed to an open lot, and there among
the bushes the knot was tied.
