Tho late negro exodus from western Tennes¬
see to Karins, has created some alarm; but iu
our opinion it weuld be worth thousands to
every Southern State if the exodus would ex

was designed by the Creator that two races of
people so different, in every respect should
Jive together under the saute temporal laws.

OCR ATHENS LETTER.
Mr. Editor: I ree in yonr last issue
a reply to an artels ot last week, writ¬
ten from thiB place. I do not intend to
enter into any personal controversy,
but will inform M. that J ought to its in
sympathy with the m»nutain people, as
it is the land of my birth, and all I
hold dear lies in her grand old hills.
Neither did 1 intend to cast any
inflection upou the marketing facilities
of the mountains, and I do not think
any reasonable person will think so. if
they give my article justice. What I
raid was this, that tbov had no market,
for their corn unl< ss hauling it IK) or 7f»
miles, and so they boil it up, and of
course can afford to pay DO cents a bush
«1 for it for that special purpose. But
that is of no consequence and it is uso
less to discuss it further.
Tho talk ,on the streets has been
mostly about railroads during the past
week. Of course everbody hero is in
totes led iu the North Eastern, and it
has been known some time that a move
was being made for the extension
t le road towards Rabun Gap. At the
last meeting ot the'Cky Council propo
6 tims were received from the Richmond
A: Danvi la road, which iu substance, is
about this: They agree, if the. City of
A'.liens will transfer to them the stock
owned by the said city, that they will
extend the road to Clarksville within
two years, and to Clayton within live
yens or sooner. It also guarantees
satisfactory through rates to and from
Athens, for all points East and West.
Jf it fails to perform these conditions,
it forfeits its stock so acquired. The
ci-y cotiuo'i accepted wilt tho drawn proposi¬
tion, and the contract be up
and submitted to Ute citizens for ratifi¬
cation. Stock lias been in demand,
and about two hundred shares have
changed hands at 5(D;s a share. There
is good reason to believe that proposi
t'oi: s w.11 also be made by Mr. Wad ley
Aid bis assoc hues for the control of the
North-Eastern. Iu any event the pros¬
pects are bright, for th » early extension
of l»« road. While it is a thing to bp
regretted that it will not go through
Cleveland, as things now look, stilt it
will interest the mountains above, and

A LITERARY REVOLUTION CHAL¬
LENGE.
The old-lino publishers have, verv
natural y, not been well pleased wiih
tho now famous enterprise, “The Lite¬
rary Revolution”; and in depreciation
of Its character havo laid special stress
upon the claim that in cheapening hooks
so vastly it is against, the interests
of American authors The Revolution
boldly meets this assertion by state¬
ments as follows: 1st. That, they are
already paving to American authors
more money than any other publishing
house that is less than twenty five years
established. Rd. That, American au¬
thors rarely receive lion pub isfters a

probably more nearly three fourths, of

thors have been published at the an -

ing no money, and paving no copyright,
but tliemselyes tecciving a large ; er
centage upon sales made. 4th That
they propose hereafter to pay to Amor
iean authors for acceptable manuscripts
a copyright of lii per cent, instead of
JO percent, and they claim that their
low prices, and immense sales result n'
therefrom, are far more in the interest
of authors than much larger copyright

by the celebrated historian Benson J
Lossing, LL. I). This poem is almost
as much a part of American history as

Lossing bas greatly increased both its

historical comments and illustrations.

reap a handsome toward, even front the
small royalty upon the low price.

BAPTIST CONVENTION.
Athens, Ga., April 2<Uh— 1 The great
Baptist convention of Ga., has been iu
session here during the past week, and
was composed of quite a number of
distinguished gentlemen, among whom
we noticed the Hon. Judson E. Clements
—the man who defeated Dr. Felton in
the 7th. There is nothing very strikiug
about him at a casual glance, but on a
close inspection you can distinguish a
latent tiro that knows no subjection.
He is very unobtrusive, and does not
seem to think himself the most observed
of all.
In the convention the Rev. Mr. Xun
nally introduced the following resolti*
Don which created quite a spirited dis-i
cussion among sotno of the members;
“Peso ved, that this convention ap¬
point a commission of fivo delegates to
petition the General Assembly to repeal
all laws allowing tho sale of Iquor in
the State, and that all chutches and
religious bodies be invited to cooperate
That this petition be presented in the
name of the Georgia Baptist conven
tioa." It met with a spirited opposi¬
tion from some of the body, but we
noticed that tho lion. David E. Butler
in particular, was very bitter in his op¬
position to it. In tho course of his re¬
marks lie was trying to impress tl e
absurdity of such a thing as this being
brought by a religious body before the
Legislature, for the Legislatures as a
general tiling, tire couip'a d of von
immoral men. He said that iu this day
there were three things open to a young
man. Firs', the chain gang; 2 id, the
penitentiary; 3d- the legi.-l.itire In
spite of all this opp<a;ti»n tue bill
passed by a vote of (id to 4.1. There
were a great many things of minor im¬
portance acted tnon by the convention
Besides hearing the tegular routine nf
business, your correspondent, has never
had the pleasure of listening to any
finer preact ing than he heard during
the session of tho convention.
The Hon. Emory Speer reached home
Sunday morning to the delight «*f his
many friends, looking fresh and healthy.
We bear it hinted iu society circles that
there is going to ba a wedding in high
life, and that the lion. Eiuory is to ho
one of the parties, but do net know
whother there is any truth in it or not.
Great preparations are lining made
for tlie Fireman’s tournament, which
comes off here tho JDth of May. There
w ill bo many visiting companies present
to participate in the exercises, and a
grand time is anticipated. I will close
for fear i weary your readers.
