We refer our readers to an article in
this issue on temperance. The author
of the piece is from the pen of one of
White counties best and most popular
meD. Unfortunately for him, and his
friends, about five years ago lie became
the victim of strong drink. He tried
this rugged aud thorny pathway of iifes
bitter gall until satisfied of the wretched
end such a course, if persisted in, would
eventually precipitate him. Disgusted
iv;h his own past life and the weak and
foolish habit indulged by so many of his
fellow associates, he has resolved to
henceforth renounce the deadly poison
which to daygiveth its ruby color in the
cup and is pleasant to the taste bat “at
Inst biteth like a serpent and stingeth
like an adder.’’
'Tis a noble resolution taken and
may heaven give you moral strength to
legist every temptation, that your jlife
may be crowned with many years of
usefullnee, social and domestic happi¬
ness. Whito county has no better cit¬
izen, than in the person of our esteemed
friend, T. Y. McAfee; bis commu¬
nity a more useful member.

TEMPERANCE.
For the Advertiser.]
Mr. Editor; 1 read an article in
yoi.tr last issue on Temperance, signed
'‘Blue Ribbon,’' which, leaving out a
part, met my case, anti fitted several
other cases. I have tried the use of
intoxicating drinks until Lam. satisfied
that the excessive use of the same will
drag down and ruiu every' man who
uses it. I would c .11 on everybody who
uses it, outside ol’ medical purposes, to
think over it. While you ha“ve not a
drop in your body, and stand atQuud
where you can find a crowd of drauuk
ards and hear them use the name of
God so awfully, it. is. enough to cauct |
humanity to quake and tremble. In
the name of high heaven, will you give
this a thought! If you will loobe you
can. see that almost every crime that
is committed, is. caused by the use
drink. Only this last week, a man was
killed on the Air-Line Railroad, in iiaii i
county. \vho was lying drunk on the j
track. I
I have tried the use of drink for the I
last five years, and I have never taken
it at aqv .time that it has done me any
good, but harm, and my advice is to
shun it as you would a rattlesnake, and
more so, for it is morejdangerous, for it
takes from you and your family their
rights. Think for one moment that
ten, fifteen, or twenty-five cents a day
for whiskey, would give every member
of your family a good English educa
tion.
I have quit. It will not do to indulge
in stroog driok. I have quit, and expect'
to remain so, God being by helper. I
am, yours, truly, T. V. McAfee, j
