Estimates of tbe amount of money that President Castro ot Venezuela thriftily deposited In Europe prior to his flight vary all the way from $10,- UOO.OOO to $00,000,000. Where did be get It? Is the natural question. Most of bi3 wealth has come from monopo lies out of which be bns received tbe lion's share. The latest nnd one of the most Ingenious of those monopo lies was tbe sole right tu butcher cat tle. This was said to produce n net income of $2,000 a day, as the cattle raisers were forced to sell their nul- maLs for almost uotblag Ik the absence of competition. Foreigners of all nations, ns well as the Venezuelans, have contributed to Castro's Kurojiean bank deposits. After four years of exploitation tbe “receiver" of the New York iBermu dez company's asphalt property turned Into the Venezuelan treasury only $K,- 000 as the net proceeds of four years' sales, amounting to nbout half a mil lion dollars at the mine. All but $8.- 000 of this sum, the “receiver" stated, was absorbed by "expenses and Im provements.” The "receiver" neglect ed to mention tbe profits derived from the sale of Ibe asphalt here. Added tp the half million dollars charged to "ex penses aud Improvements," the profits made on the sale of refined nsphalt make itu enormous sum. which has been divided between Castro aud his American bnslnesa associates. But the cattle und asphalt grafts arc only samples' of the sources from which Castro has enriched himself at tbe expense of Ills own people and for eign Interests lu Venezuela. Business Locals.
