Mother* a* They Join the Home Circle at Evening ^Jjj Alone With Mother- Do not we all remember with pleas ure the days when "the others” were out, or we, perhaps, not x>erfectly well, and mother had us in her drawing room, or work room, or took us out for a little walk alone? .v.ii iliat we did not love to romp . . . >. There is a very real danger that the mother of a large family may never fully come to know her children, and gain that influence over them for gcod individually which is so desirable The great event in every young man's life is his awakening, There comes a time when he,s aroused trom tho dreamy carelessness of boyhood by the opening possibilities of life. If he then drops into indifference and begins life in an easy, shiftless was, he fritters away his chances. If he comes to a deep. his best, he arrives early at the highes rank among equals in business, pro fession or trade. Enthusiasm leads him to attempt the seemingly impossi ble. Energy will achieve the marvel ous. Effort will seize transcendent eadership in tho chosen sphere. These forces in youth look forward, while age looks backward. They make youth radically venturesome, while age be- that every mother should have. We c " mei conservatively cautious. Youth do not hesitate to say that it is abso- j rapidally venturesome, while age be luiely impossible|for:a woman to become: comes conservatively cautious. Youth the confli'ant and friend of her children , m «W mako mistakes, but is doing some- unless she weekly-nay, daily-lkpe>nd seme ; Thing. Ageless active, may be less short time alone with each. Only in mistakes. It is well for enthusiasm this way. a i. a :h child feel the securi- and energy to be guaroed by experi- ty of his or her ownership of that pre cious mother. The stern realities of life permit only short seasons of recrea tion, and it is only by planning judic iously the arrangements of time and divisions of labor that a busy mother can insure a child his rightful portion of her company. o o o Making Home Happy, Let every parent instill into the minds of the children the principles ol self-sacrifice, cheerfulness, generosity and making others happy-make home so attractive that the boys mid girls will find more pleasure there than else where. Give the boys a pretty room; pictures and ornaments have a tendency to refine them. Give your children good and wholesome books, for the character of a child is greatly influenc ed by the books he reads. After read ing the book of a noble and unselfish man, the children will try to emulate it. Music and (lowers brighten the home. An interesting game will add much to the pleasure of an evening. Heading aloud ia both pleasant and instructive Let the conversation at the table al - ways be bright and cheerful. And j < . here, let us say, cultivate an excelloh deportment at the table always- however polished you may be, if joii table manners are neglected they w> surely betray you. Let each mother o! the household do all in his or her power to make home the brightest and hap piest place on earth. ooo A girl who is brought up to earn her owu living near will “just settle down i.o nothing.” They will underst-i i l he value of money, having earned it, and can give het- husband wise counsel and sympathy in his business dilficultie.-. She can take entire charge of tin money expended for the house and il it in sue ' a buMness-like way that it will give her husband infinite satis faction. She can earn a little sorm thing foi herself perhaps, and at lee she wiii have the comfort of kn twii., that whatever happens, she will fall 01 her feet. If her husband dies, she wi be able to do something toward th support of hcrBclf and children. An' we think a woman who has sense am intelligence enough to be self support ing is always more respected by her husband and everyone. ooo There iB a vast difference between a house and a home. The house is but a building and furniture, the outward shelter and the gathering place of the household. The home indicates the kindly family affection, the tnoughtful care, ready sympathy, mutual confi- dcocs, and trust of the members. A true home breathes the atmosphere of love. A child should be made to feel that his home is indeed a home, the happiest place in the world, not merely an outward shelter and a resting place, bat a center of enjoylnent, sanctified and purified by love, the thought and remembrance of which should be the safeguard of his life as he goes forth to the world, giving strength and propor tion to his character. once but not to be paralyzed by fear, ooo Could He who promised our burdens should be light if wo trusted in Him, and in the matchless sermon on the mount, warned his disciples to take no thought of what they should eat, and rebuked Martha because she was fret ful and cross and all out of sorts in try ing to get up a feast for him, have any approval of the “much serving,” the relays of china and silver, and the cere monious attendance of the present day, or a word of commendation for the cheerless, worrying Marthas, who bake and brew, and fry and stew, and wear themselvus out with self imposed cater ing for morbid appetites. ooo When economy becomes tho chief den and aim of existence, a sort of domes tic god, before which all must bow down, the happinost of the home is likely to be sacrificed. Evefy expen- diture.thut would give pleasuro Is held in abeyance until auch a time as the family feel that they “can afford it,” and ns a rule, this time never comes, and th* pleasure is relinquished. o l.inga may rule natiors, yet woman’s deft hand may prepare the dish that rules the king.
