How to Increase the Yield of Fruit Increased fruit crops arc more often the result of good manage ment than ot good luck. Fruit trees and iruit plants need a liberal supply of Virginia-Carolina Fertilizers The trees absorb plant foods—that is, nitrogen, phosphoric acid and potash — Irom the soil just the same as any other crop. Experi ence has shown this over and over again This truth has become so well recognised that “ return to the land what the tree removes if you would expect the best results ” has become an axiom with the best growers. Apple, pear, peach, orange and other fruit trees soon respond to careful iertilization. llut be sure to use the best fertilisers. " I made a test with other companies' fertilizers,’’ says Mr. H. O. Lowry, of Manatee County, Fla., “and yours proved to he the best. The yield w here 1 used Virginia-Carolina Fertilizer, was just twice as much as where the other two companies’ fertilizer was used.” Hundreds of users say Virginia-Carolina Fertilizers are cheapest because of their good qualities—give better satisfaction and quicker results. Many facts of great interest and value to fruit growers are pub lished in the new 1909 Farmers’Year Book, a copy of which will be scot free on application to any of our sales offices. APRIL 3rd, 1909 South Has Taken Step Forward in Development j of WoAderful Natural Reoonrce. WASHINGTON.—Through the Im provement In the system of turpen tining the South has taken a long step forward In the movement for the protection and development ol one of the country’s most Important natural resources, the rich yellow pine forests which make the United States the leading nation In the pro duction of rosin, turpentine, and the other products known as naval stores. Began In 1904. Improved methods of turpentining were first established to an appreci able extent during the producing sea son of 1904, when the cup and gutter system was installed by a number of tho most enterprising manufacturers of naval stores In Georgia and Flor ida. Since that time there has been a steady and satisfactory Increase In the percentage of turpentine and ros in produced by these conservative methods. The work In conserving these vast turpentine orchards of the South has perhaps come In time to stay the early destruction of yellow pine forests threatened by years of careless management. Experiments in Georgia. Experiments conducted by the Unit ed Stales forest service at Ocilla, Ga., and Green Cove Springs. Fla., as well as definite and reliable data received from operators throughout the naval stores belt, have effectively determ ined the great advantages of the new methods over the old. Not only has It been shown forcibly that the con servative methods are of great pro tection to I ho forests, but sufficient data has been collected to show that the increase in yield of both turpen tine and rosin bv the new and im proved systems furnishes a strong ar gument In favor of their use. Greater Yield. Reports from the states where na val stores are produced show that where there Is a greater percentage Of turpentine produced by Improved i methods there Is also a greater yield, j The following table gives the average ( yield of turpentine per crop of 10,500 boxes or cups, reported and compiled by stales, together with the percent age of turpentine produced In ench slate by either the cup and gutter or cup and apron systems: P.Cf. Of All Kinds’ on short No tice Done 5ii J- D. ffitaon Next Door to J. R. Hines Rote: In North and Sknith Carolina improved methods are not In use. Accepting the Information contain ed in this table as a basis for com paring the results of thw new meth ods with the results of the old sys tem of cutting the destructive boxes In the trees, some allowance should be made for the difference In qunllty of timber as well as the age of the Industry In the states given. Tho timber in Texas and Louisiana is cou- sldered superior to that in Georgia nnd Florida nnd the industry is not so old In the two western states. But the Improved conditions under which turpentine and rosin are manufactur ed In Texas nnd Ixmlsfana will not account for more than one-fourth of the increase in yield. Cup and Apron System. To demonstrate more fully thnt the use of Improved methods is largely responsible for tho remarkable In crease shown, the reports from two of the large establishments in Tex as, one using the cup and apron sys tem and the other cutting boxes into the trees are compared. The estab lishment using the cup and apron system reported a yield of 1,372 bar rels of turpentine for 20 crops, as against a yield of 1,500 barrels of turpentine for 35 crops where the old methods were employed—C8.2 casks per crop for the cup and apron system as against 42.8 tor boxes. Both companies were operating for the first year and timber and weath er conditions were practically the same. The two establishments report ing these figures employ's high stand- ard of business methods and the fig ures given are reliable. Forty-two barrels Is considered a fair average yield for the first year the trees are bled and where boxes are used. HY It is to your advantage to have an account with the MERCHANTS £ FARMERS BANK.
