CAM YOUSEF A&i W. .J-
BY J. C. McAULIFFE
Farming around Augusta baa received
great IrnpotuH during the paat yeur or
two and Homo of mo best agriculturist*
In tho country have boon developed In
that line. Take Plnckey Steiner, every
body around the city and in It knows
him, he has made a wonderful record as
a business man, but he has accomplish-
as much In farming as he has In any
other line of work. Last year no grew
u countless number of bales of cotton
and various other staple crops, but by
way of diversity he planted a eouple of
acres of Irish Potatoes after Lotting his
fine oat crop and made a young for
tune at It. This year he is going Into
the work on a larger scale and ho is de
voting «|iilte a good deal of attention to
other root crops, inducing artichokes
and sweet potatoes. From these ho ex
pects to derive much profit. Concerning
his Irish potato crop several northern
ami eastern farm papers had much to
say in demonstration of what Augusta
territory could do In this respect. He
plants the Lookout mountain potato for
a second crop and It always grows well
and makes a hlg yield.
There are other farmer^ in Augusta,
too, some on a smaller scale. While Mr.
Btelner wus growing potatoes, Mr. John
Sylvester tried his hand on tomatoes and
the results obtained were alinom beyond
belief. On a little plat of ground up In
Summerville he grew some of the finest
tomatoes Imaginable. In addition to
these other splendid vegetable* were
grown and tho garden yielded many
other eholco things suitable for the table
of the most fastidious. This brings up
mother feature In -■■odern life. Too
many southern people negtptt their gar
dens and consequently have no fresh veg
etables. Mr. Sylvester's plan may bo
emulated with profit by all.
Another farmer who Is attaining fame
throughout the country Is Judge Henry
C, Hammond, of the superior court of
the Augusta Circuit. He studied the
work from every practical standpoint and
he has met the full measure of success
at every turn. His farm Is nothing out
»f the ordinary when compared to hun
dreds of farms around the city, but
the crops that grow out of the ground
show that there is more in the man than
there is In the land, llo makes immense
crops of hay and ho always has plenty
to sell after supplying Ids own farm aud
pleasure stables. There are but few who
accomplish this In farming,
llocently he has inaugurated a new de
partment In this line and that Is In the
forest protection. He has a tract oJ
some three or four hundred acres ot
land which he Is going to fence In a sub
stantial manner and try to protect tin
trees und the wild game so that the place

No Time For Friendship.
In this burv, busy life, how few of us
find time to cultivate friendship, Th
cares of our families’ our business, our
profession; the stnif?j?le to keep up with
the time, up with our neighbors; up
with our competitors; the worry anc
work and anxiety of it all demand every
moment of our time, and leave us non.
for our friends. Why, some of us hard
ly know our owd families! We are up
and away in the morning before they
are quite awake; we have no time to
return at noon, and the evening meal
finds us so weary and exhausted wc
scarcely can notice anyone, or havein-
clination to say anything, as we hurry
through in silence amt then drag our
selves off to our office or store to finish
up the odds and ends which the close of
j our busy day has found undone, and
j which we cannot leave over another.
