(By Mr*. John A. Logan.)
There has been nothing Imported
from Europe to the United States
that has been so demoralizing as the
baneful system of tipping servants.
It has come through the emigration
of servants and has become such a
tax that few people can afford to tra
vel or accept an Invitation to visit
in any home, no matter how intimate
one may be with a friend. If your
means are not unlimited you dare not
run the risk of being muen em
barrassed In the home of your friends
because of the insatiable demands of
these cormorants. If you fall in their
ideas of liberality they can make one
nto3t uncomfortable and you are able
to be the victim of their vengeance
when you have departed by their
falsehoods and misrepresentations to
their mistresses or masters, as many
of them who occupy positions they
do not wish to lose, have sometimes
by insinuating methods even suc
ceeded in so ingratiating themselves
Into the confidence of their depend
ent employers that as astonishing as
it may seem, it is disastrous to any
one who incurs their disfavor.
I have in mind a friend who was
Invited to make a visit in a delight
ful English home with friends for
whom she entertained the highest re
gard. Hut was shocked to have add
ed to the note of Invitation a lln“
saying "her only expense would bt
the tips to the servants." Doing
unable to divine the amount she was
"expected to give, and ns the entour
age of her friend's establishment was
very numerous, she was forced to de
cline the invitation and forego the
pleasure of an otherwise delightful
visit.
Most persons have had their first
experience of visiting In palatial
homes, where the enjoyment yf the
hospitality of valued friends lias beer
completely spoiled by the avaricious
glances of expectant servants whom
you knew' front the state of your fi
nances you would be unable to sat
isfy. To such extremes have servants
cut t ied their surreptitious demands
upon guests In almost all homes that
persons prefer to go to a hotel to
stay and accept Invitations to din
ners, luncheons, driving or automobll-
lng with hosts who desire to enter
tain them. 1
On the cars everyone Is expected
to pay for the slightest service ren
dered, notwithstanding you have paid
for the requisite tickets for first-class
accommodations.
In hotels, in addition to excessive
prices for every privilege, you are
expected to fee every bellboy, eleva
tor operator, head waiter, table wait
er, porter, bootblack, driver, and lit
erally every employe of the hostelry.
If the boy brings a pitcher of water
to your room he waits before taking
his departure for you to give him a
fee.
These assessments, for such they'
really are, have become so exorbi
tant that one cannot travel from ne
cessity or pleasure or stop at a hotel
without allowing for a multiplication
of their legitimate expenses. "the
vicious practice has Invaded private
houses In many instances, and some
times one cannot depend upon prope-
service from servants to whom you
are paying high wages unless these
servants receive periodically extras
which they have not merited by their
faithfulness.
If home-keepers, managers of ho
tels, car officials and persons in
charge of employes would pay proper
compensation for services rendered
by everyone employed in any capac
ity and Issue orders prohibiting them
from receiving tips, the whole system
would be abolished to the comfort
of everybody and the elevation of
servants in the respect of them
selves and others.

Success is in the blood. There
are men whom fate can never keen

lungs to the utmost, drink In the sun
shine, greet ycur friends with a smile
and put soul into every hand clasp.
Do not fear being misunderstood
and never waste a moment thinking
about your enemies. Try to fix firmly
In your own mind what you would
like to do, and when without violence
of direction you will move straight to
the goal.
Pear is the rock on which we split,
and hate the shoal on which many a
barque is stranded. When wo become
fearful, the judgment Is as unreliable
as the compass of a ship whose hold
Is full of iron ore; when we hate we
have unshipped the rudder, and If
over we stop to meditate on what the
gossips shy, we have allowed a hawser
to foul the screw.
Keep your mind on the great ant
splendid thing you would like to do,
and then, as the days go gliding by,
you will find yourself unconsciously
seizing the opportunities that are re
quired for the fulfillment of your -da-
sire, just as the coral insect takes
from the running tide the elements
that it needs. Picture in your mind
the able, earnest, useful person you
desire to he, and the thought that you
hold Is hourly transforming you into
that particular individual you so ad
mire.
Thought is supreme, and to think is
often better than to do.
Preserve a right mental attitude—
the attitude of courage, frankness and
good cheer.
Darwin and Spencer have told us
that tills is the method of Creation.
Each animal has evolved the parts It
needed and desired, bird Is fleet be
cause he wishes to he; the bird tiles
because it desires to; the duck has a
web foot because It wants to swim.
All things come through desire and
every sincere prayer is answered. We
become like that on which our hearts
are fixed.
Many people know this, hut they dJ
not know it thoroughly enough so
that it shapes their lives. Wo want
friends, so we scheme and chase
across lots after strong people, and
lie In wait for good folks—or alleged
good folks—hoping to lie able to at
tach ourselves lo them. The only way
to secure friends Is to he one. And
before you are lit for friendship ya-i
must he able to do without It. That
Is to say, you muBt have sufficient
self-reliance to take care of your
self, and then out of the surplus of
your energy you can do for others.
The individual who craves fried-
ship and yet desires a aelf contered
spirit more, will never lack for
friends.
If you would have friends, cultivate
solitude Instead of society. Drink in
the ozone, bathe in the sunshine and
out in the silent night, under the stars
say to yourself again and yet again
"I am a part of all my eyes behold!"
And the feeling will then come to
you that you are no mere Interloper
between earth and heaven, but you
are a necessary part of the whole. N'o
harm can come to you that docs not
come to all, and, if you shall go down
it can only he amid a wreck of worlds.
Like old Job, that which wo fear
will surely come upon us. By a wrong
mental attitude we.have set in motion
a train of events that ends in disaster'
People who die in middle life from dis
ease id most without exception a\-o
those who have been preparing for
death. The acute tragic chronic stale
of mind—a culmination of a series ot
events.
("huractor is the result of two
things, mental altitude and the way
we spend our time. It is what we
think and what we do that make ui
what we are,
lty laying hold on the forces of tha
universe we ure strong with them.
And, when you realize thlB, all else is
easy, for in your arteries will course
red corpusclts, and in your heart tho
determined resolution is born to d)
and to he. Carry your chin In and
the crown of your head high. We are
gods in the chrysales.

If you were a merchant, would
n’t you rather sell a thousand
yards of silk in a day, at a profit
of 10c a yard, than to sell (with
out advertising) fifty yards, at a
profit of 2octs a yard?
Isn’t it plain that in all such
instances the buyer gets the ben
efit of the "volume of business”
which advertising enables the
merchant to do?
The money cost of a journey—
long or short—by stage coach
(not to count time, <-r comfort)
was greater than that of a pres

“old ways” of doing thing were
not even CHEAPER.
