Cno Man'n Fortune From the Price of
a Pair of Shoes.
Some years ago a man who had
started in business in Tasmania found
that ho could not moot his engage
ments and was eouuielltxl to call a
meeting of bis creditors.
Among ills assets were a number of
Mount Blrschoff fin mine shares,
which were regarded as worthless. It
was the first tin mine discovered In
Tasmania, and tlio outjaK was not as
heavy iw the prospectus declared It
would lie.
The chares dropped In value, and
when (lie debtor offered them to Ills
creditors the latter refuse’ to touch
them.
Among tlie creditors was n poor
shoemaker who had supplied the mail
with a pair of shoes. He offered to
take the shares In payment of Ills
debt. No one raised any objection,
and lie took the shares, saying, "They
may turn out well some day.”
Five years later, under proper man
agement. the mine developed Into a
valuable properly. It was a veritable
mountain of tin. mi l the shares sprang
up to un astonishing point.
Eventually tlie metal was “cornered"
by a French syndicate, and. tlie shares
reaching a fabulous price, tlie once
Indigent shoemaker sold out anil real
ised a fortune.
The money was wisely Invested, and
now lie Is l:i the enjoyment of an In
come of several thousands a year de
rived from the payment for a pair of
shoes valued at $3.—London Telegraph.
Absolute Obesity.
There Is a member of the faculty of
a certain university who. to use the
words of a colleague, "Is as rotund
physically as he is profound metaphys
ically."
One day the professor chanced to
come upon Ills children, of whom lie
has n number, all of whom were, to his
astonishment, engaged In an earnest
discussion of the iiu-anlng of the word
"absolute."
■•Dad,” queried one of the youngsters,
“cun a man be absolutely good?"
"No.” replied tlie futlior.
"Dad," put In nnother youngster,
“can n man be absolutely bad?"
"No."
“I*npa.” ventured the third child, a
girl, "cun a man be absolutely fat?"
Whereupon father fled Incontinently.
