THE BLESSING OF
FRESH AIR IS TOLD ♦
Farmer. i«
♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦
In it is Health anti Vigor,
anil it is Needed At This
Season of the Year.
Perhaps no other fallacy has done'
so much to promote ill-health in the
south as the foolish notion that there
Is something peculiarly and myste
riously Injurious about "night air,-
as if night air were different from
the air which we breathe and which j
gives us health atnl strength in the '
day-time. We should have far fewer !
deaths from consumption, far rewer !
headaches, and^a great many more \
people with rosy cheeks and untroub
led bodies, if people made It a prac
tice to sleep with their windows open.
If fresh air cost money, we should
have millirns of poor people com
plaining that their poverty prevented
them from getting enough fresh air,
whereas, since it costs nothing, Go-
go to great pains to shut out as much
as possible this great health-making
gift of God every night that comes.
Go out of a close, unventllatcd
house early In the morning Into the
fresh, sweet air out of doors and note
the contrast; ran you conceive how
It Is possible for people to deliberate
ly shut themselves up one-third of
their lives iu the lmd, unwholesome
air of the closed room, when the in
vigorating atmosphere of God's out-
of-doors is free to every living being
for the mere asking?
Even In the coldest weather, plenty
of cover In the sleeping-room with tho
open windows will make one perfect
ly comfortable, and there are few
things which will do more to promote
health and vigor.
PROFITABLE HOGS
DEPEND ON FEED
Method and Stuff Given
Will Return To Farmer
in Excellent Manner if
Right.
The mod' rn Idea of economical
feeding for meat production Is that
the young animal should be liberally
fed from the start on rntlons calcu
lated to produce a healthy and pro
perly developed body and then fin
ished and marketed at the earliest
time practicable.
In rare cases, where the hogs can
he kept growing sufficiently to make
fair frames, 11 may be profitable to
pursue our southern method .but as
a general rule, although little Is fed
each day or month during the long
period of the hog's life, in the uk-
grcgale more Is fed than would he
necessary to produce the same weight
, In a younger animal In a shorter
i time. It is frequently stated that
• It never pays to allow an animal
[ kept for meat market to cease gain-
' Ing In weight. This Is generally so,
because of the fact that It takes a
certain amount of feed to keep up the
body heat and energy, and if merely
enough for thnt purpose Ih fed. It fol
lows that since no gain Is made there
Is loss of feed to the owner. If It
pays to feed for pork, It does not pay
to permit a hog to lose flesh. , When
a hog Is losing flesh he is consum
ing an equal weight of his own bodv,
or, In other words, the owner is Teed-
Ing pork. Pork Is worth more than
feed; else why keep hogs to convert
feed Into pork? It will pay to keep
the hogs growing all tho time.—
