for their female troubles. Cardui has been found to'
relieve headache, backache, pain in the side and diz-j

Mr*. Maxwell Johnson, Tampa, Fla., writes: “Cardui cured
me after doctors and everything else had failed. I had been suffer
ing with numb spells ever since I was 10 years old. One day I
I decided to take Cardui. I have now taken 5 bottles and I can say
that it has cured me. I advise all suffering women to give Cardui
a long and fair trial.”
I Mrs. Johnson suffered years. ITave you? Do you wish to?

"Time and the hour runs through
the roughest day."
It doesn’t matter how hot and dls-

may be, there Is always pleasure In
the dow-cooled nights, cr relief in the
soft southern breeze. Somehow folk
can’t look ahead beyond the present
moment If It be fraught with tribula
tions. trials and cares, but tf the sun
Is shining beautifully and the crops
are growing nicely they will predict
dire calamities In the way of drouth
later on in the season. And truly it is
almost appalling to think of the
mighty destruction which can he
wrought by the king of day when the
pitiless rays of summer come down
on the parched land. These are the
times when men realize how helpless
they are in .ue hands of the One who
holds the world in the hollow of His
hand. Despite the fearful object
lessons so many folk will go on and
try to combat nature, try to do things
Inconsistent with the best there Is
In life and against the higher and holl
er laws cf God and man.
Drouth and flood Barely bring men
to a clearer appreciation of the power
pf the Omnipotent hand and it Is
hard to see how some can so fro
quently forget to be thankful, forget
to bow In submission to the will that
sways the destiny of nations day by
day. Individuals count for nothing
In the great struggle which we under
go In Ufe, and the best and great
est are too soon forgotten In the rush
which tramples all beneath the green
grass—the grass that covers us gently
when all else seems harsh and cold.
It Is sweet, however, to think that In
the times cf drouth in our Inside
lives there Is some one somewhere
to radiate the health-giving sunshine,
and when the summer sun parches our
souls tile oasis Is found In some lov
ing words, some tender expressions
of love and affection.
If I were a preacher I would like
to preach the doctrine of love and
about the religion of sunshine, though
I I know that It Is far wrong In one
Of all the sad sights that cotno to
men the saddest is to be found among
the men who struggle through life
without planning, and consequently
never amount to much. But there is
another side, brighter by far than the
crown of success and the laurel
wreath, that most any man may gain.
It does not mean success and happl-
ness to be lord ef all creation, but on j
the contrary there’s many a home
with a cottage for shelter and repose
that Is to he desired far above and
beyond a princely mansion. If love
and peace and happiness are found In
that home, it Is more worthy of a
place In history or in the hearts of .
the people than any mansion grand, I
and we can all surely have that,
though ft does look like it is a hard I
thing for some cf us to get the other. ■

i sense and will fall miserably if put |

thing of a more substantial nature—
something that stands the drouth and
the str.rm and conies through It all
more beautiful and exalted than ever.
The best c-f us cannot throw stones;
but everybody is prone to have some
thing to nay to help along the strap-
gltrs in life and seme of the most
deplorable scenes confronting us com*
from actions of those who are en
compassed with the best things In the
world—plenty of money, all the neces
saries ef life, loving families and gotd
friends, and still they fall to show
appreciation In its truest sense, and
consequently fail to spread Joys around
about them when It Is so easy for
them to do it,
Rural life is the best even amid
such surroundings, for when the heart
is troubled and the spirit almost
crushed one can go out In the fields
and woods and find consolation and
solace that nothing else beside tender
words and the gentle touch can sup
ply. Isolation Is a dreadful thing no
matter where you find It, but it Is
more undesirable, mere filled with
trials In some places, and when it
comes down In the city v/lth hun
dreds around you it Is unbearable, for
there the motley throng dees not
’•now you when you fail, dees not
think of you when you are not in tin
midst of the crowd, and in the end
oblivion shrouds all that is left in
mortal way. It Is good, though s-.o.ne-
imes, to be buried away from the
turmoil of the world and be Ignorant
cf the cares of fitful life.
The most pitiable people on earth
are those who are centering th-ir
lives on those who fall to appreciate
hem, or else are not in position to
;lve back the higher call which comes
r/hen soul erics cut for sympathy and
eve and the other kindred things of
Ife that lead on up to the heights.
But that is part of life.
One ef the (strangest phenomena ol
ife Is the fact that times change and
ve change with them. With the pass,
ng cf the heur through the roughest
lay we also pass to other ways amid
jther scenes and follow courses that
-arllor in life seemed to border on
he Impossible. There is nothing that
•quals the ever-changing panorama
f the country, with the improvements
hat are now going on despite the ad
verse conditions which seem to eon-
ront the people over the land, In

For a short, terse, Illuminative defi
nition of lifo philosophers have long
sought.
Their conceptions and Ideas have
been given ofttlmes In high sounding
and scientifically constructed sen
tences. But to find a definition of
life that the great majority could
seize, grasp, call thotr own, has been
a difficult thing.
But tho apparently Impossible has
been accomplished. For Mr. Herbert
Spencer, greatest of philosophers and
simplest of teachers, has said: "Life
Is a correspondence with environ
ment."
Tho definition Is so simple that one
wonders that tho form of words had
not been stumbled upon before. But
simplest things are rarest In their ap
plication to the needs of humanity.
Men nre so constructed that they look
for the far off, tho distant, torguiful
of the tnet thnt right nt hand nre the
elements that shall explain and make
their life beautiful.
"Llfo a correspondence with envi
ronment."
In order to live In the ocean tho
medusa must have the breathing ap
paratus that shall be able to fill lls
lungs, even though It may be at the
bottom of the sea. It must bo able
to resist the action of the wind and
the wave. Hnve eyes thnt shall bo
nblu to see through the aquamarine
of the sea. Having all these things ,
adjusted and In eorrespondenne with i
its environment It lives, moves and
has Its being. But let thnt m»duaa
he east up high and dry on the beach.
Let It come to an entirely different
environment, It muBt, In order to sus
tain life, ho able to adapt Itself to
its new conditions. It must be able
to breatho In the free nlr, run on the
sand, see In the open. In short, In
order to continue ItH existence It must
be able to adapt Itself with remark
able precision to the new order by
which It Is surrounded, llnnble to j
do this, It soon dies. "Life Is n cor- I
rospondencc with environment!’’
Take the thought In the higher
scale, that cf man, Man is given his i
eyes, oars, nose, tongue, feet and
hands. With these he Is able to H**e
In an environment that calls for tho*
continual exercise of these things.
Using them to the best advantage, he
rises In powr v and Is able to make of
himself a olcsslng to those who wnlk
by Ills side, cr who follow Ip h|s foot,
stops,
Xjih M.t cars he hears glorious har
monics, with his oyos hiios beautiful
sights, and ao on through the whole
category. But < uco let a man lone his I
hearing, he gets out of correspondence 1
with his environment so fur as heur- |
Ing Is concerned. Onco lot him lose
his eyes, he Is out of correspondence
so far as sight Is concerned. Bo far !
ns these nre concerned ho is dead to
tho world. And when sight, hearing,
smelling, tasting and feeling are all
gone, and the man is no longer cap
able of exercising any of these func
tions, we say he Is dead.
Dentil is a cessation of correspond-
eneo with environment.
How many people there nre who are
dead but do not know It!
They have no oar for the glorious
harmonics of life. No eye for beauty.
No ability to discriminate. No nostril
to inliale sweet perfume. No con
sciousness of bring touched with tho
need of a brother.
They wonder at a man going Into
raptures over music, art, literature.
They fall to appreciate reasons why
men delight In tho establishment of
hospltnls, homes, orphanages and
houses of quiet retreat for troubled
heartH. Life calls for the best, that
Is In man, and those who fall to grasp
the significance of the calls around
them, In so far as they do fall to
grasp, may lie said to be dead.
You know such people. Thoy have
absolutely no Interest In anything ex
cept their own lives and very little in
ti rest is thnt. They do not respond
to the call. They rre dead, but they
do not know It. But you who are
alive, alert, active, you In whom the
best of life Is strong and the call of
life loud and your response to the
call rendv, Instant, quick, you know
that they are dond.
You look nt them. You see written
all over them tho words, "I’m a dead
one." It hIiows In tho lackluster eye,
shines In the frayed coat and undusted
shoes, peers from yawning rents In
the shoes and shouts from the bat
tered and broken hat. The whole ex
pression of their face nnd life seems
to e«y: "1 don’t enro nothing for no
body, and nobody don’t care nothing
for me.” Dead! But they don’t know
It.
Tho first sign of life Is Interest In
environment. Tho second sign, activ
ity In environment. The highest and
best sign, readiness to help unfortu
nates In the environment.
If you are Interested, active, helping
In your environment, you may be sure
thnt you are not yet n dead one. If
you nre not Interested, active, helping
in your environment, you are a dead
one, though you may not know It, ,
Are you a dead one? -r'’.
