Milledgeviiie Cotton
Rate Wifi be Resided
It re probable the Railroad Commis
sion will reach decision this week in the
Milledgeviiie compress case which in
addition to the question of the possibili
ty of operating an independent com
press at Milledgeviiie, 'involves the
questions of rates on cotton from the
interior to the ports and a differentail
late-cn compress and “soft" cotton.
There was practically only one side
-to the case when it was argued befoip
the-commission and it looks like 'an
ea»v-matter to guess what the decision
will be. The general opinion seems to
be that there will hardly beany change
made in the present states according to
tnfovmation from Atlanta.

The annual memorial of the Elks will
beheld at the Opera House Sunday
afternoon and the program for the oc-
cason is one of the best of its kind ever
made up here. Splendid music will be
rendered and the occasion will be very
impressive in every way.
Editorial mention of the memorial is
given in The News this week and there
is no doubt bat that the opera hou>c

of i ion: or less notorio is character,
was shot in a free-for-all light at Hope-
well church about five miles out of
town lust Saturday night and died
Sunday night a.-} the result of his
wounds. Whil; there were many
witnesses a coroner’s inquest was hel l
over the remains, but the authorities
seem unable to rea-h a solution of the
problem of who did the fata! shooting.
It is quite probable that a thorouuh
investigation by the grand jury will
bring the alfair to u culmination and
a number of witness will star in the
case.
Rev. Ford McRe; Has

Solution of Trouble in Methstf ^4
Church Affairs Made hy Sending'
Milledgeviiie Man to St. John.
Because there seemed to be an end
less amount of trouble in sight fontthe
Methodist church management on ac
count of dissension of the Atlanta’
clergy and laiety and the Augusta
stewards over the appointments of the
North Georgia Conference and develop
ments following same, Bishop Henerlx
Tuesday afternoon assigned Rev. Ford
McKee, of this city to St. John church,
Augusta. Mr. McRee was originafiy
assigned to Newnan.
The change presents an unusual stat -
of affairs in Methodism and has created
a great amont of comments throughout
the whole country and especially in
Georgia. St. John is one of the great
est churches in the North Georgia Con
ference and there is no doubt but that
he will Hill his new appointment with
due credit and the people hore see him
leave with reluctance.
Later developments show that the
airair is not yet settled, except so far
as Mr. McKee is concerned.

TWO FIRES OCCURED
HERE MONDAY NIGHT
Opinion Expressed That Firebug May
be Causing Trouble And Watch Will
be Kept Hereafter.
An unusual occurrence in the way
of two fires in one night has caused
much comment in Milledgeviiie the past
few davs. Monday night about 12
o’clock Dr. J. P. Atkinson’s barn was
destroyed and only by hard work was
adjoining property saved from destruc
tion. Just after 4 o'clock the fire
alarm again called out the department
and the Newell house, corner Clark and
Greene streets, occupied as a dormitory
for the Georgia Normal and Industrial
Collego, was ablaze. The character of
the building wa3 such that the flam >s
rapidly envelope! it and valiant effort
was required to prevent the structure
from completely burning down
The alarm system at the college
dormitory worked well and the score
of girls in the building were safely
out long before the danger point was
reached. Virtually all their property
was saved, though some few lost their
belongings, The bulk of the college
property in this building was dostroyol.
The girls are no-.v in the different halls
■>f the collego and will remain there
throughout tha remainder of the season.
On account pf the two fires in one
night and the imnrobubilityof fire at the
hours named there has been a suspicion
aroused that the blazes resulted from
the work of some firebug and close
watch will be kept on this score in
tho future.
PRISON COMMISSION ASKING
FOR BIDS FOR REFORMATORY
The Prison Commisson of Georgia
is advertising in The News for propos
als for the construction of the new build
ing for tho state refomatory. A local
concern obtained the contract for build
ing the present structure and it is under
stood that it is quite likely Milledgeviiie
folk will put up the new building. With
tho construction for the new building
the reformatory will do more and better
work for elevating the erring youth
and with the improvement will come
changes for which The News has con
tended for some time and it will he
gratifying to the general public to learn
of the progress of the work under con
sideration.

Great New England Play
at Opera House Tonight
The "Joshua Simpkins’* company
with a fine brass band and splendid
orchestra, will be 1 seen at the Opera
House hero to-night, Friday, Dec. I!.
The pluy is made of fun and realism
combining the pleasing , features of
realistic melodrama and the ever popu
lar rural play. Tho character sketches
are said to be very clever, while there
is an abundance of good music, singing
and dancing in it. Those lovable old
country characters are introduced and
their saying and doings create much
amusement. Tha company comes to
us pucommendod as a good ona-through
out. The saw-mill scene in the third
act is said to be wonderfully realistic, a
genuine circular saw being seen
motion, with Uncle Josh’s son lashed
*o a log by the villains and started to
ward the glittering teeth of the rapid
ly revolving saw.
