COMMISSION COMP’Y
Whether he recognizes the fact or
elec's to overlook it. every good citi
zen ia more or leas directly interested
in the census about to be taken. If
such citizen should take a broad view
of the subject, he would instantly be
come convinced of his duty in the Dre
mines; for it is the citizen in the aggra-
gate whose statements and reports con
tribute to make reliable, or of doubtful
accuracy, any census that is written
A census, in the fuller sense of the
word, is a history of the progress of a
people. This is particularly true of
any United States census; for the gov
ernment snares neither money nor time
in collecting the facts which are de
termining factors in the lives of all the
people whether they live in the country
sparse or in the cities full, whether
they be farmers or lawyers, merchants
or bankers, mechanics or manufac
turers.
Preparation for the great census of
1910 has been in progress for months
and months. The schedules, while
broadened and enlarged in point of
class, have been greatly simplified, so
that the questions to which full and
complete answers will be sought, will
be within the comprehension of the
almost illiterate citizen.
Georgia and the South have much at
stake in the coming census. It is a
golden opportunity for the Southern
agriculturist and the Southern manu-

facturer, the Southern banker and
Southern railway man. We group
these four industries because they are
distinctly representative. Thev are,
indeed, in a sense wholly unobjection
able, the big four of this section of the
country.
It is all important that a full and an
accurate report of each of these indus I
triet shall be given, in the census of j
1310, the place it will deserve. . I
We stress the duty of the Southern
state —the cotton producing states in j
particular—for the reason that the oth- l
er sections of the country are becau»e
of experience, more alive to the value
and the importance of the census than
oi’r section has permitted itself to be. (
That is an unpleasant fact, but it is un
deniable
The census of the current year will
win a more commanding position in the
eyes of the world than any of the
twelve that have been written.
During the ensuing ten years the cen
sus of 1910 will be referred to, consult-
ed and quoted as a standard and sole
authority on all questions which touch
the lives of a progressive people. Hence
the necessity for a thorough apprecia
tion of its yaule and importance by the
people of the South.
The South has made great strides
along every line of desirable growth
during the ten years just past. Every
fact which tends to illustrate the high '
degree and the full measure of that f
progress ought to be entered of record, >
and thus become a part and parcel of |
the census.
We nded carefully to n te and report •
the facts which relate to agriculture ,
in all its branches in the South. Dig
deep for those facts. There is nothing
in the history of Southern progress of 1
whi-h we need be ashamed; everything ,
of which to be proud.
We appeal to our people to make
ready to receive the census taker. Ex
tend him a cordial welcome. Be pre
pared to give him. full and accurately,
every fact that Is diligently sought for
by the questions which he will pro
pound.
Understand that the schedules which
he must fill with the facts you give him
are not for purposes of taxation, but
for information —information which,
when presented under the scholarly
touch of the skilled statisticians at
Washington, who will edit the census
as a whole will challenge the wonder
and the admiration of the world, or if
reported in an indifferent and unappre
ciative spirit, will militate against us,
against our every interest as a cutturS.
and a progressive people.
Do not Uhderrate the value and the
superior importance of the census of
1910 which is about tu be taken.

The Facts About Pe=m=na.
Is Peruna an alcoholic beverage in disguiro? Is it possible to use Peruns
as a substitute for whiskey? Eo people buy Peruua and use it as a toddy c:
a bitters, or a bracer?
It would be the easiest thing in the world for any one to demonstrate the
falsity of such statements. Let any one go to the drug store and purchase a bot
tie of Peruna. Let him undertake to use it as a beverage, or take this remedy ir
doses considerably larger than those prescribed on the bottle. Would the result
be alcoholic intoxication? Nothing of the sort. Let any one try it and see.
Peruna ia a medical compound quite heavily loaded with medicinal ingred
ients. If taken in doses larger than prescribed it would produce a positive
drug effect No one could take it as a beverage. If any one doubts these state
ments, try it and see. We know that Peruna cannot be used as a bcvc»>
age; that it will not intoxicate; that it cannot be used as a substitute fo:
liquors. Y/e guarantee that PERUNA CONTAINS NO CHEAP WHISKEY -
OR ANY OTHER WIIISXEY, for that matter.
It contains a smnll per cent of eolegne spirits, absolutely essential to dis
solve and held in solution medicinal ingredients, but the drugs contained in
Peruna prohibit its use as a beverage. It would be the easiest thing in the
world for any one to demonstrate this if they chose to do so.
Peruna is sold everywhere. THE INGREDIENTS ARE PLAINLY
PRINTED ON EACH BOTTLE. It has been said over and over again thal
chemists have analyzed Peruna and found it to contain only cubcbs and
whiskey. Now we challenge any chemist to demonstrate any such statement
Let any one who has even a smattering knowledge of chemistry purchase e
bottle of Peruua and sco whether or not it contains whiskey, find out for him
self whether cr not it is composed of cheap whiskey and cubobs. Of course,
cubebs is one of the ingredients of Peruna, but there are many other ingred
ients. It contains hydrastis canadensis, corydalis fonnosa, collinsonia, and at
least four other medicinal ingredients. To be sure, no chemist could so ana
lyze Peruna as te be able to identify the various medicinal ingredients. This
is beyond the ability of any chemist. But any ordinary chemLt would be able
to say that Peruna is heavily loaded with medicinal ingredients of somo kind
in addition to cubebs.
Now why are these statements ropeated when their falsity could be so
easily demonstrated? Simply because there is continued hostility toward Pe
runa on the part of the medical profession. Very likely tha magazines which
took up the crusade against Peruna and denounced it as a cheap beverage
were misled by statements of the medical profession. Probably they were
sincere in their attitude towards it But now, after all these things have been
said and refuted, it would seem to bo in order for such people to use a little
fairness and common sense in the matter.
Every time any cne says that Teruna is nothing but cheap whiskey and
cubebs ho is telling a lie, an absolute falsehood. Host people intend to speak
the truth. But the prevalent habit of repeating other people’s statements,
without investigation as to their truth, has led many well-meaning people to
say these false things about Peruna.
Used according to the directions on the bottle, PERUNA 13 A SAFE
AND RELIABLE CATARRH REMEDY, hut, like any other good medicine, if
taken in excecs of those doses, it will produce drug effects very unpleasant' io
the person who takes it.
It ia therefore up to every honest person to qnit making such statements
concerning Peruna, cr acknowledge that he is repeating slanders shout which
he knows nothing. Cne might just ns well say that Castor Cil is an intoxicant;
that if taken in largo enough doses it will operate as a “ N ecie.” If peoplo
never tried to see, but simply repeated such statements about Caster Oik tkj
majority of people would come to believe them. I; is no easier to demonstrate
such a statement about Caster Oil than ii would be about Peruna.
Any one who takes Peruna knows that such statement! are false. To say
that Peruna i3 cheap whirkey and cubebs mr.y constitute good material for
jokes cn the vaudeville stage, but there is no excuse for any cue wb" ;_^-
