SELECT VIGOROUS CHICKENS
By O. F. Taylor
The owner of r. mixed flock ought to
put ft much care into the selection of
his breeding-pea as the raiser of pure-
hreds does. Many farmers and farn -
ers* wives would like to better their
stock, both for profit and their own sat
isfaction, bu» they do not want to nut
money In fancy birds. They can make
an astonishing amount of improvement
by simply put.ing a little time and care
Info the business of selection.
To begin with, cull the flock care
fully. Look at the rear first for signs
of straining about the vent and bag
ging down, ns with too much fat and
leject all such bird?, as also any thnl
have crooked breast-bones. Choose birds
with long brest-honcs and deep breasts,
ns along the keel is whore the best
meat lies and In a general-purpose
flock provision must bo ruffle for thl-i.
Cnoose birds with bright, round, alert
eyes—the quick moving ones, the b'rds
that are always first at the feed-bucket.
Reject long-beaked, snake-beaded birds,
the ones with dull eyes and those tnat
sit on the roost through the day. When
the flock has been culled as above sug.
grpted, cull again, choosing six to eight
of the best birds of a uniform typo fo»*
n hreedtng pen. Take the best of the
old main birds of the same general
type to mate with these and sill all the
other tunics.
A breeding-pen necessitates a sepa
rate house and run, but the house mav
he n dry-goods box; and if a run is out
of the question for lack of means to
Inclose It, give the breeders and the
laying hens range on alternate days, or
for a time give tho breeders only free
range. Many flne birds have lost thult
usefulness as breeders because of too
close confinement.
If from all the hens there are but
one or two from which you care to
breed, furnish these with a house an 1
yard, and put the male with them for
a few hours only each day. If the male
Is put with the hens early In the morn
ing the progeny will be mostly females.
Also, the mating of a cockerel with hens
produces pulle's and of pullets with
cock birds produces cockerels. Hmnll
breeding pens give excellent opportuni
ties for experiment, and If a note-hook
Is kept, the record of such muting?
mnkes most Interesting and valuable
reading.
What ever else N done, look for
vigor and constitution In the birds. A
hen that docs not have a good consti
tution will never be a good egg pro
ducer; a male with a good constitution
will never breed egg-producers. Bonn*

Cultivating The Orchard Nowadays
of cultivation of n»

The host kind

much discussion. It can
09 a general rule, however, that wher*
the rainfall In summer Is deficient, h
is extremely desirable .«> cultivate Vu
soil thoroughly, and \u p a dust mulch
at least four inches thick on it at Oil
times, to preserve the soil moisture.
Ab a rule, I belLve In cl«in cuIUvh,
tlon of orchards, but where they grow’
on hillsides that arc liable to wash, it l
desirable to seed them down occasional
ly. Continued cultivation hasten the
using up of humus in the land, which
binds It together ngulnst washing. In
the Eastern states, where the rainfall
Is generally sufficient, It Is usually de
slrnble to cultivate the soil for, say
five years, then seed it down to olovor
for a <f)Uplo of years and then plow
it UP again.
Some experiment made nt tho Ohtc
Experiment Station show good results
from orchards not cultivated at ull
where the Kioil about tho trees has
been mulched for a series of years.
1 uin Inclined to think that this mulch
lug of the soil would work better ir
Ohio than In northern Michigan or Wld
consln, where the ground Is cool all *
summer, and yet 1 know of some cases. I
oven In these cold flections, whr.ro nr*
chords have boon grown successfully •
mulched. In parts of Minnesota* and the I
Dakotas where tho snowfall D light in I
winter, some of tho heat apple-growers |
follow the practice of win P r mulch I

Ing. This !.• especially true where there ,
Is no snow on the ground, and I have
seen many orchards grown with a cor, 1
blnntlon of mu'chlng and cultivation,
the soil 1x1 g mulched and cultivation
tho soil being mulched six or eight feat
from thf* tms In all directions and the
land between cultivated.
It will he seen that in the matter of
cultivation the orchard Is somethin.?
