Some preachers are afraid to give

however highly they may esteem it.
Others are not afraid. i
One of those who is not afraid is
quoted below. Head what he says.
He means evary word of it. If yon

thinks.

Valuable Birds
In Spring Time
Progressive Farmer
While the birds an> nenernlly neg
lected and ofttn wantonly killed, It is
clear that the kinds oC wild birds that
do the farmer more good than harm
aro much .111 *e humeious than is gen
erally supposed. Birds are often de
tested for working among crops, when
they are there hunting something
harmful to the crops; when they aro
there helping the farmer make bet
tor crops than lie possibly could with
out them. Some of the helpful birds
occasionally eat a little of the crop, hut
they will at the same time do so
much good that the balance Is in their
favor from the standpoint of good
farming.
Do You Prefer Birds or Bugs?
Tlds is true for the ordinary farmer
and for the.one who Is making a spe
cialty of truck or fruit. lings ami
worms are tho enemies that reduce
the harvests of the farmer; and tho
birds are the enemies of the InigH
and worms. Nothing can take the
place of the birds in this good work.
With the exception, of a few small,
four-footed creatures, birds and bugs
and worms are the only wild creatures
thut persist In a thickly populated ter
ritory. On the one side are the birds
as man’s friend, and one the other Hid"
are the others as the enemies of man.
How Bird* Help tho Fruit Grower.
All states should have laws to
protect man’s friends, the birds; and
the laws should he enforced. Such
laws will not be enforced unless there
Is a strong public sentiment in favor
of them. As owners or workers of
the land, the attitude of the farming
population will be highly Important.
Each farmer can suggest to those
who represent him In Ills legislature,
that he wants his friends to have the
benefit of favorable laws. That is
one thing each farmer can do. Each
farmer can also post ills land, giving
notice that hunters are not to tres
pass, provided he has law on his side;
and In most states he will have.
Every fruit grower has a vital in
terest in protecting the birds, because j
without them Insect enemies of fruit
nml truck would soon become almost
uncontrollable. They are serious
enough now, as every orchurdist has
realised.
Make Your Place Attractive to the
Feathered Folk.
Birds lire not slow to learn where
they are hunted And where they iV'e
not, and will tend to increase in those
places where they are safe. By the
means of this hublt of theirs, u farm-

Is more than sentiment In protecting
birds—there Is money in It for the
farmer. it will depend mostly on the
farmer whether laws protect the birds
and him. The sportsmen are far less
numerous, but they have usually found
little difficulty in getting their wishes
put Into the form of laws. Will the
biggest class of citizens In the coun
try, the farmers, demand what Is good
for them?

An aching back is instantly
relieved by an application of
Sloan’s Liniment.
This liniment takes the place
of massage and is better than
sticky plasters. It penetrates
— without rubbing — through
the skin and muscular tissue
right to the bone, quickens the
blood, relieves congestion, and
gives permanent as well as
temporary relief.
