Rev. Elam F. Dempsey Writes
In Praise Of The City Beautiful.
HR. B. T. BETHUNE
AT THE PALACE
tttl-H I I I
Mv dear Mr. Editor:
I was much pleased with the sugges-
tion recently maoe in your paper about
The City Benutiful Committee. This is
something which I should rejoice to see.
Already our city is a beautiful one. In
Spring and Summer, its trees, lawns,
and meadows are charming. But as
nothing earthly ia perfect, we feel im
pelled by a desire ever to improve.
Each citizen can add something by
looking about his own homo to soe what
can be bettered. As the old rhyme
■ays,
*'lf each would see to his own reforma
tion,
How very easily you could reloam a
nation."
So it is in this matter. A beginning
can be made by each one, as it were,
* ‘sweeping before his own door."
Now, we all know that woman is the
natural umpire in all that pertains to
beauty and neatneas about the home.
How fitting, then, was tho suggestion
that the ladies of the town be the ones
officially intrusted with this matter.
Besides, since the days of Eden, Adam
has never been able to refuse Eve any
thing! If, therefore, our ladies begin
to turn their attention this way. the ;
success of the movement is a foregone I
conclusion.
The refining influence of a beautiful
environment, who can estimate? It is
a constant ministry. Our boys and j
j girls will instinctively be moulded by it j
into a chastened grace of nature other- j
wise unattainable. Dr. Eliot, Presi-!
dent-Emeritus of Harvard University,
| has said that thousands of women se
cure more refinement and are given
a larger pleasure in life by the tendance
upon a rose garden than by reading
Browning or Milton. If that is true of
them, then it is more so of the unread
ing citizens who are bo crowded with
busircBs cares that their education
must perforce come from their environ
ment.
Few cities have equal natural advan
tages of beauty with Milledgeville. I
confidently expect the day to come
when the finish of art shall be added to
its elemental charm of nature. Much
has been done, let us bring it to per
fection.
Cordially.
Elam F. Dempsey.

Mr. Bcthune has been engaged to
sing at The Palace Theatre during his l
stay here and no doubt will mean a |
crowded house for the entire time, as
his equals are very seldom found as an
operatic singer.

The News is in receipt of the follow
ing rommunication in reference to con
ditions at the Georgia railroad depot,
mention of which wait mude in this pa
per in boosting the city by printing
statements concerning the enormous in
crease in traffic of the Georgiu road:
Editor Milledgeville News: —
Concerning Increased business at
the Georgia road, which you related
recently, only mention was mude of
carload traffic. A condition of affairs
that is of vitul Importance to tho busi
ness man of Milledgeville and one
which ought to be remedied, exists at
the depot with less than carload ship
ments While the big shipments have
increased wonderfully still the smaller
shipments have multiplied more rapidly
and it ia now virtually an impossibility
to handle the freight there under
present rggangementa.
The big budget of freight is piled
high as possible in tho depot and it
takes a long time to find goods. Again
there is not room for many drays to
load and as a result a frequent occur
rence is to see several drays and wagons
waiting their turn at the platform,
often half an hour, or more, being spent
in this way. The public at large is con
cerned in this matter, for ufter all they
pay the freight. This applies going
and coming, in hauling goods to and
from the depot,
We're with you and a new depot,
both for freight and passenger accom
modation, should be furnished. In
cidentally it may ho mentioned that
much difficulty is being experienced in
getting in telephone communication
with the depot, for over half the time
the line is busy. Surely more than one
phone can bo used to advantage in a
big office like the Milledgeville office of
the Georgia road, so give us another
phone, too.
Yours truly,
Merchant.

Baldwin County Land
Brings $32 Per Acre
Thursday morning Mr. J. E. Stem-
bridge purchased the Stanley place, six
miles east of Milledgeville, from Mrs.
E. T. Stanley. The tract contains only
BO acres, but it brought the magnific
ent price of S02 per acre, which is top-
notch for land that distance from the
city. However, it is a pretty piece of
land and even at that figure it is con
sidered cheap.

Baldwin Blues, has issued an order com-1
nianding all members of the local com- i
panv to report promptly for drill every
Wednesday night this month. Next
month drills will be held twice each
week until after annual inspection.
The Cpmmanding Officer does not
seem to hold to the opinion that com

members of his company think too
much of their organization to fail in
