MODERN SCHOOL AT
POWELTON, GEORGIA
Sparta, Ga.,—Two thousand people
gathered at Powelton, Hancock cuunty,
last Friday in one of the greatest edu
cational meetings in the history of the
state when thu S. N. Chapman public
school was formally dedicated.
The building is one of the most mod
ern in the state and is constructed un
bungalow style, contains eight rooms,
eight acres of land for poultry yard,
flower and vegetable garden, will have
a cannery and kitchen connected with
the school.
It is named in honor of the late S. N.
Chapman, who taught the o'd Powelton
school for 40 consecutive years.
Speakers from far and near were
present, including Prof. O. N. Benson,
of Federal Department of Agriculture,
Washington, I). C., State School Com
missioner M. L. Brittain, Commissioner
of Agriculture Thos. G. Hudson, Presi
dent E. C. Branson, of the State Nor
mal School, and J. C. McAuliffe, man
ager of the Augusta Corn Festival.
Splendid addresses were delivered by
all speakers and the crowd was welcomed
by Prof. Twiggs, principal of the
school. Several recitations were had
from the children also.
A great Georgia barbecue with 26
hogs properly cooked, a genuine basket
dinner and picnic combined fed the
crowd sumptuously.
A feature of the occasion was the
reunion of the Chapman family, five of
S. X. Chapman’s sons and several of
his daughters being present.
Cojjmissioner M. L. Duggan, of Han
cock county, presided and received the
plaudits of the people, and the visitors
for the great work accomplished.
