Order of Owls Receives Blow From
Publicity Given Atlanta’s Affair
The order of Owls baa received a ]
blowfioin which it will he a hard mat-1
ter to recover. Last Sundry, Monday |
and Tuesday cir.sidt ruble public com- j
1 ment was stirred up over the reported
situation in Atlanta and August joined
j in the affair to a certain extent A
I local organization was planned for con
summation next Tuesday night, but it
i has been materially affected by the dis-
{cussiun.
j It seems that Organizer Caulfield in
] Atlanta received some $12,000 in initi-
i jition fees which all went to him and his
workers, leaving the local order with*
] out any residue from this source. A
j few of the leaders failed to telish such
: action and Madison Bell, attorney for
j the local-order, and well known here.
I was one of the lending speakers and in
j denouncing the Atlanta affair said in ]
I part:
] “Frankly, 1 am ashamed of the way |
! this thing has been done. It reminds
| me of a showman who U3ed to cry
1 ‘Come in here, bovs, and get fooled. It
| only costs a dime,’ and when he got the
i people in he would point to a knot hole
and say. ‘There used to be a knot in
| that hole. Now go out and tell your
! friends all about it.'
j "Caulfield nas left us the bag, but 1
have done my best for you. You have
a charter giving you the right to have a
charitable and social organization and i
S under that charter you have your rights
! irrespective of Caulifield.
“1 thought it was due myself and,
I mv friends among the laborers to tell;
you this thing. There is not an Owls'!
Club in Georgia where you can visit as
! the organizers have said you could.
| “1 have received a letter otfering mo '
• money to make speeches. They were 1
r.ol answered: they now know that I
will not stand for a crooked deal. They
ottered my fare and expenses to Mil-
ledgcv'lle and a fee to speak where I
was to help organize the town, thinking
I would accept their dirty dollars. They
told me to name my price.
“1 say that we can so conduct this or
ganization under our charter that no
member shall ever go cold or hungry.
“Never have I been dishonest and 1
would bo playing a part in a dirty gnmo
if 1 did not tell you this and prevent this
money being sent to Talbot.
“Furthermore, it is your duty to go
on record and prevent happening in
Birmingham and elsewhere in the south
what happened here. He is using
us as an advertisement ”
Mr. W. 11. Fulton, who was engaged
in organizing the local nest, is non
plussed at the story and has asked for
definite information from headquarters
before proceeding further, according to
information ob ained by The News.
