DISMISSED FROM SERVICE FOR
REFUSING TO LINE UP NEGROES
AND WHITES IN ONE FORMATION
Little Rock, Ark., June 28.—By vir
tue of a telegraphic communication
from the war department received at
Camp Pike today, Capt. Eugene C.
Rowan was dismissed from the serv
ice and (Lieutenant Robert H. Hall
was dismissed and given a sentence
of twenty-five years at the military
prison at Leavenworth.
Captain Rowan’s offense was that
he refused to obey an order issued by
tbo brigade commander, caalling for
a troop formation because both negro
and whit soldiers were included in
the formation. He is a native of
Georgia, but has recently lived in
Mississippi. Captain Rowan said he
will go to russia to assist in the reor
ganization of the Russian army if he
can secure passports.
Lieutenant Hall, of Brooklyn, was
a mess officer and deserted in Febru
ary. Several days afterwards a check
up of the mess funds revealed short

was arrested in aSn Francisco. Hall
was stripped of his insignia today.

At a meeting of several boys of
scout age of this city, held in Col. Er
win Sibley’s oillce for the purpose of
laying plans for organizing a local
co ncil of Boy Scouts of America, sev
eral important matters preparatory to
the organization of the troop here
were discussed and committees we
appointed to carry these plans out.
It was decided that an enlistment
station be opened between the hours
of 2:30 and 3 o’clock Thursday after
noon, July 4tli, on the Court house
lawn for the purpose of receiving re
emits. A scout must be between tht
ages of 12 and 18, inclusive, and it is
required that a fee of $1 be paid by
each member. This amount is neces
sary to purchase the scout hand-book
for beys and also to cover the mem
bership fee required by the National
organization. Every scout must have
this handbook and every scout must
have paid this fee required by head
quarters. The small surplus amount
will go into the treasury for inciden
tal future needs.
The scouts will need a scout hall
and it is requested that anyone who
has a room not now being used which
would answer the purpose to volun
teer the same for the local council.
A vacant down-town office would be
suitable.

The Excellency of The Hun.
By DR. FRANK CRANE.
We have been stuffed full of talk
about Hun superiority. We still hear
sail, “The eGrmans are a great peo
ple. You have to hand it to them.
Wonderfully efficient!”
Mr. Harry Lauder, the keen Soot,
has punctured this bubble: “What,
then,” he inquires, “has the boastful
Hun given to the world? Did he dis

To which list might be added the

a host of other things that have pro

Still, the Hun excels in some ways.
F'or instance:
He lias made war more atrocious
than anv other human being since the
Red Indian and tlie Barbary Pirate.
He stands alone, supreme, “wrap

Nothing this side of hell is superior

He is beyond us all in Egotism.
Englishmen are a bit chesty and

Meat Must Be Sold
Fresh meat is perishable. It
must be sold within about two
weeks for whatever it will bring.
A certain amount of
beef is frozen for foreign
shipment, but domestic
markets demand fresh,
chilled, unfrozen beef.
Swift & Company can
not increase prices by
withholding meat, be
cause it will not keep fresh
and salable for more than
a few days after it reaches
the market.
Swift & Company cannot tell
at the time of purchasing cattle,
what price fresh meat will bring
when put on sale. If between
purchase and sale, market con
ditions change, the price of meat
must also change.
The Food Administration
limits our profit to 9 per cent on
capital invested in the meat
departments. This is about 2
cents per dollar of sales. No
profit is guaranteed, and the
risk of loss is not eliminated.
As a matter of fact, meat is
often sold at a loss because of
the need of selling it before it
spoils.

PLEDGES FOR $150,000
FOR THE W. S. S. HERE
Although the complete fig-res cov
ering the amount subscribed by the
people of Baldwin county to the War
Savings Stamps fund has not been
compiled, It is estimated that the
pledges amounted to something like
$150,000, which is .less than half of
the quota.
The local War Savings Stamp com
mittee Is now engaged in totaling
these figures and owing to the fact
that the sum allotted to this county
is far greater than the pledges, ncl
let-up will be made in the drive to
meet the requirements of the govern
ment.
