Launchings On 2d, 3d, and 4th Of
July Come Up To Expectations Of
The Officials.
Philadelphia, July 9.—This country’s
Fourth of July ship launching aggre-
a:ed 87 and eight others took their
initial diii on the seccnd and third of
July, making a total for the week of
95, according to reports received to
day by the emergency fleet corpora
tion here.
Of these 53 are wood and the bal
ance of steel construction. The total
deadweight tonnage is 474,464, the
wo den vessels’ share being 187,000
and that of the steel 276,464. At the
ofllce of the fleet corporation it was
stated that word is expected at. any
'me of the launching of another steel
chip and possibly some more wooden
vessels, which is likely to raise the
iggregate to 100 or beyond that rec
ord-breaking mark.
The sticking of two ships on the
ways and the postponement of eleven
launchings on the Columbia river be-,
cause of a freshet held back the num
ber that shipping officials expected to
officially announce on Independence
Day.
