Fresh Beef Travels
on a Rapid Schedule
Fresh beef for domestic mar
kets goes from stockyards to
retail stores within a period of
about two weeks. Although
chilled, this meat is not frozen;
hence it cannot be stored for a
rise in price.
A steer is dressed usually
within twenty-four hours after
purchase by the packer. The
beef is held in a cooler at the
packing house, at a temperature
a little above freezing, for about
three days.
It is then loaded into a refrig
erator car where a similar tem
perature is maintained, and is
in transit to market on an aver
age of about six days.
Upon arrival at the branch
distributing house, it is unloaded
into a “cooler”, and placed on
sale.
Swift & Company requires all
beef to be sold during the week
of arrival, and the average of
sales is within five days.
Any delay along the above
journey means deterioration in
the meat and loss to the packer.

MAY NOT DOUBLE
GOVERNOR’S PAY
Proposed Increase In Salary
And Office Appropriation
Develops Opposition in The
House.
Atlanta, July 23.—Law makers cf
the state now have under considera-
ticn legislation to double the salary
of the chief executive, and also to
double the amount appropriated fcr
his clerical^ help. The governor now
receives a salary of $."i,000 and *.'>,000
is given for the employment of cler
ical help.
In looking into the matter some cf
those who are inclined to believe that
the present is no time for the piling
up of additional expenses upon the
treasury have found that the govern
or of Georgia receives about the av
erage salary paid in th^ various states
of the union. Beginning with the
South Carolina, which pays her chief
executive only $3,000, the salaries in
most of the states range as high as
$7,500, while in only four, according
to a recent list, do the governors re
ceive $10,000, this amount being in
large eastern states and in California.
Texas allows only $4,000 fcr its gp*'-
ernor, Florida $6,000, Mississippi, $9.-
000, Tennessee, $4,000.
The governor’s salary is supple
mented in Georgia by several perqui
sites. .He receives rent free a horse
that would cost in the neighborhood,
of $200 if it were rented; the state
pays the light and gas bills, keeps up
the grounds and in addition provides
the governor's*wife with a contingent
fund of about a hundred dollars, some
times more, for current expense.
The salary and other expenses al
lowed would probably amount to ap
proximately $15,000.

MAKING IT HARD
Atlanta, July 23—If the marriage
relations bill introduced in the Geor
gia senate should pass both branches
of the legislature, Georgia will have
marriage laws of much higher standard
than ever before.
The Andrews bill provides that ap
plication for marriage licenses must
be made live days In advance, and
that none may be issued otherwise ex
cept in proven cases of emergency;
that the parties must be identified
and make a statement under oath as
to the legality of the marriage; and
that no licenses shall be issued to
those under the age of consent. Be
tween these ages and 21, contracting
parties must receive consent of par
ents of guardian. After receiving ap
plication for licenses the ordinary;
must publish the names of the parties
by posting them in his offices. Any
-ler-nn may then enter protest, and on
legitimate grounds, the license shall
je refused.
The senate failed to pass a hill of
fered for the creation of a state board
of examiners to license plumbers of
the state.
A bill has been introduced to sus
pend I be forfeiture of bonds when the
person bonded is in military service.

MARVELOUS INVENTION
CLAIMED BY ATLANT1AN
Atlanta, July 23.—If the air motor
invention of J. W. Justus,- of 9 Crew
street, turns out to be what he confi
dently expects, John D. Rockefeller's
rather expensive product, commonly
known as gasoline, will be of service
only in cleaning gloves. Steam will
also be relegated to a seat far in the
rear.
By using natural air as a motive
power, it is Justus' purpose 'to run
anything fro man tlrplane or an auto
mobile to a locomotive or battleship.
•While the scope of the new inven
tion is something similar to that of the
"Garabed’’ invention recently inves
tigated and reported unfavorably by
a congressional committee, Juetus\
points out that the principles and me
chanical details of his machine arc
radically different from “Garabed.”
While the “Garabed” invention pro
vided for the taking of. certain ener
gy from'The air and igniting It by th«
explosion of gasoline, Justus lays
stress on the fact that his Invention
calls for the use of pure air, without
the aid of any other substance and by
means of a specially arranged piping
system, creates energy similar to that
generated by gasoline or electricity.
A working model is now being made
at a local factory and demonstrations
are to be given within a few weeka
the inventor declares. „
