LIEUT. VANCE KING IS
AT HOME ON FURLOUGH
tLieut. Vance King, who is now sta
tioned at Camp Shelby, Hattlsburg,
Miss., arrived in Milledgeville Satur
day to spend several days here with
relatives, having been granted a one-
week furlough.
Since leaving the officers training
camp last year Lieutenant King has
been transferred on several occasions
to various camps throughout the Unit
ed States and he has become quit^
well known in army circles as a yount*
man of worthy traits and possessing
a splendid character. His friends here
are glad to see him and welcome hiu^
back to .Milledgeville.
Lieutenant King will return to his
post of duties the latter part of this
week.

MR. LOUIS BARNES GETS
TRANSFER TO ATLANTA
Mr. Jouis Barnes, son of Mr. and
Mrs. E. L. Barnes, has been trails
ferred from the Officers Training Camp
at Camp Sevier, Greenville, S. C., to
Camp Gordon, his transfer taking place
Monday.
In order to visit home folks before
going to Camp Gordon, Mr. Barnes
obtained a furlough of three days and
he arrived in Milledgeville Tuesday
morning. He will leave for Camp
Gordon this morning.
Young Barnes entered the officers
training camp the 15th of last May,
just before the closing of the Georgia
Military College, where he held the
place of captain with one’ cf the col
lege military companies.

SAILED FOR FRANCE

left recently for the mountains of
North Georgia. They will probably
spend some time in North Carolina be
fore returning home.
Mrs. Mary Vaughan, of Spartanburg,
C„ is visiting Mr. and Mrs. A. L.

Work on Milledgeville’s new fire dr
part meat building will be commenced
within the next two weeks, according
to the present plans of the city of
ficials.
The building will be constructed
next to the city hall under the super
vision of Mr. J. W. Marchman, of this
city. The structure will be a two-
stcry brick building of fireproof type.
The first door of the building will
be used solely for the fire engine and
equipment and the second story will
he erected for the rooming of the fire
men and will contain every necessary
convenience for the men employed by
the fire department.
Misses Effle and Helen Granad^
have returned front a trip to Nashville,
Tenn.
Miss Julia Bile King, of Macon, who
is spending her vacation with her sis
ter, Mrs. J. O. Blood worth, will be
here until the middle of August.
Mayor Miller S. Bell and son, Frank,
are spending a few days of this week
in Atlanta.
Mr. Emmett Barnes, Jr., has noti
fied his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. L.
Barnes, of his departure for France
having left his camp Thursday to sail
for the European country. He has
been stationed at Camp Hill. Newport
News, Va., during the last several
weeks, though he originally enlisted
at Camp Johnson, Jacksonville, Fla.
The friends of young Barnes wish
for him much good luck in nis adven
tures overseas and on the military
fronts in France.

Prof. Joseph Becker, one of the most
noted characters in this country, is
spending this week in Milledgeville,
htiving charge of a cooking demonstra
lion for the R. W. Hatcher Hardware
Company, sole dealers in this city for

Prof. Becker is a native of the lit
tle Duchy of Luxemburg, but he has
been in America since 1858. He fought
all through the civil war in the Con
federate army, and while he is too
old to go into service for this country
now, he very proudly displays a serv
ice pin with five stars for the five sons
he has fighting with the Allied armies.
The noted visiter to Miltedgevillo
also has two sons-in-law in the army
on the side of the United States and
expresses himself as regretting that
he cannot join Uncle Sam's forces him
self.
