ON DECK, THURSDAY.
Dear Gertie:
Well, I am on deck writing this and
I guess I am going to live now and I
have got all over my poisoning. It is
all calmed down now but of coarse
that didn’t make no difference. I was
kind of sore about coming up here for
awhile but I am all over it now and I
guess when I tell you about It you will
know why.
Well, this morning Jake and some of
the boys come down stares and tried
to get me up on deck, but i wouldn't
go. Then they went away and in about
hulf an hour somebody 1 didn’t know
come running up to my birth and lie
shook me and said “the ship is sink
ing.”
Well, .of course, you couldn’t blamq
me for what I done because I eouldn t
stand to see hundreds of brave Ameri
can boys drown like that so I jumped
up and run around that part of the
ship kind of hollering and of corse
all the boys down there they got hol
lering it and we run upstares and ev
erybody was a little excited. Some ot
the boys I gues jumped right in the
boates.
Well the officurs started giving or
ders then for everybody to keep quiet
and sent everybody away from the
boats and hollered that nothing was
the matter and one of them come run
ning up to me and said, “Did you
start this panik?”
“No, I just come erlong,” I answer
ed back.
“We will put the man in irons that
done this,’ the shouted, running ar
ound among the boys trying- to hang
it on somebody.
Well just then Jake and a couple of
pals of mine come up and took me
over to the other side of the boat and
got me a nice seat on the bottom of
the deck and told me just to sit there
and be quiet. Then pretty soon they
brought me something to eat, and at
first I was afraid to eat it because 1
certainly did not want to get poisoned
again, but after awhile 1 did and I
feel tine now.
The sea over here is as calme as any
thing and l gues we are going to land
in England somewheres tonight and
then go right across to France and
jump into the trenshes.
It is certainly fine on the sea old
pal, MENNIE.
P. S.—1 forgot to tell you that this
morning right after I come up stares
about six torpedoe boats all flying lit
tle American flags come steaming up
to meet us and ever since they been
pinning around our boat like some of
these purpoises you see In the water.
Well, do you know’, Gertie, that them
boats made everybody on bord feel re-
leeved and easy. I guess maybe Blue
Jackits aint so bad after all. But de
stroyers don’t carry no Mareens at all.
P. S.—Next Day: We are just get
ting in sight of England and we will
land tonight. Oh you Marry England.
Oh you la bel Franse. When I come
back I’ll bring you a couple of huns as
spoils, if they ain’t too spoiled already.
