Washington. — With the nationa)
house of representatives soon to go
into republican hands again, there are
a number oT important incidents which
will come to the frent from time to
time until March 4, 1919. at which
time the -democrats will turn over th.
rpins of the government to the G. O.P.
Of prime interest to the people of
the South is the fact that many of.
her representatives lose their import
ant chairmanships—for instance, Rep
resentative Lever, of South Carolina,
hairman cX the horse committee on
agriculture, one of the best in the
entire house, loses out and will here
after be a private on the democratic
side; Frank Clark, of Florida, chair
man of the committee on public build
ings and grounds, Claude Kitchin
chairman cf ways and means, and oth
ers on the democratic side go down.
They will, of course, retain Iheir
present positions until the end of the
"short session”—that is. until March
4, next, when the republicans come
into power in the ho se. With these
fchairmanships also go a number of
clerks, secretaries and other employ
es. these hereafter going over to the
republican side of the ledge.
Cannon Next Sneaker.
Likewise the house machinery goes
into republican hands. They will elect
a speaker—probably “TTncle Joe’’ Can
non again, although the old man is
now more than eighty years of age
and says that he is not able to stand
the strains c-f the position; a door
keeper. sergeant at arms, clerk and
postmaster, besides many other of
ficials of one kind and another.
Three positions—doorkeeper, serg
eant at arms, clerk and postmaster are
good paying places, being worth some
where around $5,000 a year each. J.
J. Slnnott, of Virginia, is at present
doerkeeper; South Trimble, of Ken
tucky, clerk; Robert Gordon, of Ohio,
sergeant at arms, and a good confed
erate soldier from Augusta. Ga.. Col.
W. H. Dunbar, postmaster. The latter
was the city postmaster at Augusta
for many years and 1r very popular
in Washington. His Georgia friends
and others in the sc.uth will regret to
learn that he 1b to go out after next
March, but that is part of the politi
cal game—to the victor belongs the
SpOlla.
“Uncle Joe" Cannon, although sav
ing said sometime ago that he was
getting somewhat to old for the re
sponsibilities of the speakership if
that place should ever be offered him
again, will doubtless change his mind
when he is elected by the republican
caucus sometime prior to March 4.
There is nothing else to it as seen
here but "Uncle Joe’’ for the next
speaker of the-house, and when he
goeB on the platform to again call the
house to order under republican re-
gime there will net be a man or wom
an in the galleries nd matter whether
theay are democrats or repubdeans
but who will Join loud In the th nder-
ing applause which will no doubt fill
that historic place.
Kitchin Goes Out.
Claude Kitchin. of North Carolina
will probably yield his place as chan'
rnon of the ways and means commit
tee either, to Fordneyfl of Michigan,
or Gillett of Massachusetts or Nick
Longworth, of Ohio, if Representative
Mann is able to perform the duties of
majority leader, his health having
been bad for the last year. If lie re
Lains this position then there will be
changes along the lines indicated al
though it is too early to state with
accuracy just who the leaders among
the G. O. P. will be and what posit; us
they will fill.
There does not seem to lie any doubt
that with the beginning of the ‘short
session” in December, the republii
cans will insist that nothing but rou
tine bills be considered, and they may
still even this action so as to force an
extra session- for the revision of the
tariff and ether laws. They boil- ve
that If they can take charge of the
congressional machinery now and r n
it successfully for the next two vears
they have a -good chance of puiting
Col. Roosevelt or some other republi
can In the White House. Their fight
will be waged relentlessly with the
ultimate view of success in the pres
idential election next time. At any
rate the battle is on.
