CAPTAIN TY COBB
TO QUITBASEBALL
Coming Back To Augusta As
Soon As Discharged, He
Says In New York Upon His
Return From France.
New York. Dec. 20.—“Ty” Cobb,
Detroit’s great batter and outfielder,
hopes to quit baseball. He so stat
ed Monday on his return from France
V
where he has served as a captain In
the army. He had no intention at
present, he said, of singing up again,
although he admitted that baseball
still had ’’a terrible fascination.”
“I'm going down to my home in
Augusta, Ga., and rest up for several
months,” s&ld Cobb. ”1 intend to
break away from baseball; I’m tir
ed of it I’ve had 15 years of It
and I want to quit while I’m still
good. There is the danger that the
fascination of the game has its hold
on me, but I shall make every ef
fort to tear away from it and no
sign with any cl>ub again.
“When I say this, I naturally pre
sume that the release that be man
agers gave us last fall, with its ten
days’ notice, is binding and that they
have no legal strings on me now. I
hope so, at least.
“I've made no plans whatever
ahead 1 of my rest. I haven't a pro
fession because I left school at 17 to I
play ball."
Cobb declared that the war had re-|
Ing to boom this season as it’s never I
Juvenated baseball and that "it’s go-I
done before.”
Cobb explained that when the ar-J
mistice was signed he had Just finish
ed his training and expected to be
assigned to a division which would
soon see “some real action” and
Oared the American Army “has the
finest personnel on earth, with every!
one on his toes and wideawake ever
minute.”
"A lot of that can be credited
baseball and Its close association t]
the American boy,” he added,
said “when my three youngsters grov
up, all three of them are going to
army training.”
