WHY THE FARMERS SHOULD ADVERTISE
Bankrupts are Mostly Non-Ad- vhc^rc, Vice-President of
North American Fruit Ex:hange Points Out Significant
Facts to Agricultural Men of The United States.
New York Herald Bureau, Jan 1821.)
Of all tlio busluea failure, in 1820
per cent of them were of firm* that
did not udvertise their wares. Ona of
the greatest fMpcJal agencies in
America discovered this fact, and
George A. Cullen, vice president ot
llie Norm American Fruit Exchange,
ueeU it as a text on which he based
h^ speech on "Co-operatice Market-
in,: delivered today at the annual
meeting of the New York State Agri-
euitural society. The meeting wa.
held in the assembly chamber.
After seting forth the above cited
statistics, Mr. Cullen reminded the
farmers before him that they must re
member tbat neither Dun or Brad-
treet reports cover the apple growers
f New York state, a fact that mado
he financial agency’s achievement all
ie more significant. Then he’went on
) say:
"You apple growers sitting befoi9
e furnish one of the most striking
lamples in this country of intelligent
en failing to make use of the one
,ing that could turn disaster" into
iccess. Why do California growers
iccesfully invest $750,000 a year in
Ivertising to create an appetite for
rus fruits while New York apple
owers invest practically not a cent
create an appetite for some of tha
,est fruit "produced on the face of
»\arth?
•Wake up, New York apple growers,
d advertise!
'Think of the Pacific coast raisin
owers investing $500,000 a year to
Tertislng and the prune growers
50,000 while the New York state
•mere apparently try to keep it a so-
1 from all the world! that they pro
duce the finest of seed potatoes and
msp]e syrup 1
“Wake up Now York growers, and
advertise!
“Eventually: why not now? And
that reminds me. Did it ever occur to
you as singular that the millers adver
tise flour, but that the farmers who
prod, ce the superior grade of wheat
out of which that flour is made never
advertise wheat? And that The shoe
manufactuiers advertise shoes, while
the farmers who produce the superior
hides out of which thpse shoes are
madie never advertise {heir products?
Why do Armour and Welch get all tha
good will asset out of advertising
their particular brands of grape Juice
while the growers, who produce the
best qualtiy of grapes, out of which
that Juice Is made, establish for them
selves the reputation with the public
and hence are always at a disadvan
tage in dealing with the Juice makers?
“The grower must henceforth be the
man who is known to the consuming
public. It must no longer be merely
the manufacturer or the middleman
who is known, as has been the case al
most universally in the past. The
grower must seize and hold that great
and financial world as "good will,"
which will raise him from a position
of dependence to one of power.
"But there Is a further and exceed
ingly Important use for advertising bv
the grower. That is in constantly
keeping the consumer informed when
his products are available, or to be
available, when‘ they are abundant
and when they are or should be rela
tively cheap at retail. This has real
practical value in stimulating con
sumption.”

HOW WOMEN AVOID
SURGICAL OPERATIONS
Some Are Extremely Necessary, Others May Not Be
Every Woman Should Give Lydia E. Pinkham’s
Vegetable Compound a Trial First
Chicago,111. —"I was in
bedwi th a female trouble and
inflammation and had four
doctors but none of them did
me anygood. They all said I
would have to have an oper
ation. A druggist’s wife told
me to take Lydia E. Pink-
ham’s Vegetable Compound
and I took 22 bottles, never
missing a dose and at the end
of that time I was perfectly
well. I have never had occa
sion to take it again as I
have been so well. I have a
six room flat and do all my
work. My two sisters are
taking the Compound upon
my recommendation and you
may publish my letter. It is
the gospel truth and I will
write to any one who wants
a personal letter.”—Mrs. E.
H. Haydock, 6824 St Law
rence Ave., Chicago, 111.
A Vermont woman
adds her testimony to
the long line of those
fortunate women who
have been restored to
health by Lydia E.
Pinkham’s Vegetable
Compound, after it had been decided an operation was necessary:
Burlington, Vt.—“ I suffered with female trouble, and had a number of
doctors who said that I would never be any better until I had an operation.
1 was so bad I could hardly walk across the floor and could not do a thing.
My sister-in-law induced me to try Lydia E. Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound
and it certainly has helped me wonderfully. I keep house and do my work
and have a small child. I have recommended Vegetable Compound to a num
ber of my friends and you may publish my testimonial. Mrs. H. R. SHARON,
Apple Tree Point Farm, Burlington, Vt.
In hospitals are many women who are there for surgical operations, and there
is nothing a woman dreads more than the thought of an operation, and the
long weary months of recovery and restoration to strength if it is successful.
It is very true that female troubles may through neglect reach a stage
where an operation is the only resource, but most of the commoner ailments
of women are not the surgical ones ; they are not caused by serious displace-
In fact, many letters have been received from women who have been restored
to health by Lydia E. Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound after operations have
been advised by attending physicians.
