MEXICO ASKS AID OF
M'ADOO ON RAILWAYS
Washington.—Mexlc is negotiating
with William G. McAdoo to rehabiliate
ar.d take charge of her state rail-
reads, it was learned authoritatively
Lc re today.
Mr. M:\doa la now In Mexico n?
a guest of President Obregou and
may stay there definliteiy. He in
accompanied by his wife an-1 Jouett
Shones, former assistant oecrctury
of the treasury, and now one of tho
officials of the Mexico and Orient
railway, projected between Kansas
City, Mo., and Guayamas In Sonora,
The invitation to Mr. McAdoo is
looked upon here as a movement by
President Obregon to gain recogni
tion of this government. President
Obregon, it is said realizes he must
stabilize Mexico financially and . in
dustrially to get such recognition.
With this end in view negotiations
were begun with Mr. McAdoo, who
knows both railroads and finances
and whose employment would react
favorably in this country and in for
eign capitals. Mr. McAdoo took the
suggestion under consideration and i?
is understood an arrangement calling
for his employment for several years
at a salary of $50,000 a year or greater
probably may bo worked out.
Here ls tho situation that will con
front Mr McAdoo.
Tho Mexican government from the
time the railways were taken over
by the nation under President Huerta,
has paid no interest to the American
bondholders who controlled the line3
until the Mexican government ob
tained a controlling niterest. The
American government, it is under
stood, will insist that steps toward
the adjustment of the railway debt
be taken before offeial relations are
resumed between Washington and
.Mexico City.
In addition, the Mexican rail lines
are in a state of the utmost deprecia
tion, due to ten years of revolution,
and an immense amount of locomo
tive rolling stock and other equip
ment must be purchased before re
habilitation is possible.
Reconstruction cannot, start, accord
ing to the opinion here, unless Mevica
obtains a loan from foreign sources,
obviously the United States. And
Mexico cannot secure this loan, of-
