WASSERMAN TEST VAL
UABLE IN DIAGNOSIS
MEDICAL SOCIETY
ADVANTAGE TO PUBLIC
Tim Wassermann test Is a test em
ployed in the detention ot the pres
ence of germs In the blood stream
causing syphilis. Many times there
wm bn outward symptoms of the dis
ease and Its presence cnn only be de
termined ^ by an examination of the
blood in the laboratory.
Syphilis is most commonly trans
mitted by bodily contact, although It
may easily be caught by using drink
ing cups, dishes and utensils which
h a ve previously been used by a syph
ilitic. It can also be inherited. The
organisms of tills disease, which some
what resemble a corkscrew in appear-
auco, enter the skin through the most
minute abrasions. At the site of en
trance a sore soon develops. It may
be large or it may be so small that
it will escape notice. Thess sores
.ailed lesions are characterized by
their very hard walls which nature
lias constructed in the attempt to keep
,l,e Invading organisms localized and
to prevent them entering into the
blood stream through which they will
have access to every organ of the
body.
If not arrested by medical treat-'
ment, these organisms will break
through these hardened walls and en
ter into the circulatory system. Usu
ally within a short while there will
appear a general rash or breaking out
on the skin Which will gradually dis
appear. Other symptoms may appear
immediately, or on the other hand
the disease may continuo with no fur
ther marked symptoms tor a while,
leading the patient to believe that na
ture has cured ths infection. Later,
however, the disease makes its pres
ence felt by directing Its attack
against some vital organ. Often the
patient is attacked by some other dis
ease, the symptoms and effects of
which completely obscure thosu pro
duced by syphilis. Therefore It Is
advised that, if the physician desires
to oblain a specimen of blood for a
Wascsrmann test, the patient should
gladly permit this to be done. He
should also advise the physician If he
had at any time previous noticed any
where on his body any hardened sore,
however small, and even suggest to
the physician the advisability of a
Wasserntann test as a means of elimi
nating syphilis in the dia^nos: of his
particular ailment. The sugge ion of
a Wassermann test on the par of the
physician does not carry with it the
insinuation of Immoral condo t, for
syphilis is oftentime inheritc l, and
for this the patient can in n > way
he held responsible. Again, syphilis
t an easily be transmitted to the most
innocent by means, of accident.
It is further advised that, If the
patient has been suffering from some
unknown disease which docs not re
spond to general treatment, he go to
his physician and request him to
draw a specimen of blood and forward
to the Wassermann Laboratory of the
State Board of Health, or to some pri
vate laboratory, if that be his prefer
ence. This advice is based upon the
fact that numbers of specimens of
blood from patients who could not
find relief front general treatment have
boon known to show positive Wasser-
mann tests, revealing the presence of
syphilis. Specific treatment was then
administered, with the result that the
annoying symptoms were relieved,
and the patient fully recovered.
Cities and towns should protect the
health and happiness of their public by
requiring all handlers of fruttB, meats
—in fact, all eatables—to present from
time to time a medical certificate
showing that they are free of all In
fectious diseases. Furthermore,
mothers should see to it that the ser
vants, employed around the house who
have a Wasermann test made In or-
meals and the care of the children
have a Wassermann test made In or
der to insure the member* of the
household against accidental syphilitic
Infection. This cau be done by hay
ing the family physician obtain a
specimen of their blood and mall ft
The Medical Association of Georgia
Is a very old organisation and has on
Its roll many of the best physicians
of the state. It holds unnual meet
ings, and besides has district and
county societies. This Association Is
one from which the people derive
great benefit, ns the meeting togeth
er of our physicians must bring out
many things that will be of interest
to every doctor, and the rapid ad
vancement of the science makes it al
most a necessity.
In Its Public Health section the pre
vention of disease and sanitation are
discussed and the newest thouhgt is
debated. The fact as to whether or
not a physician 13 a member of his
County Medical Society goes a long
way as an endorsement as to his
professional standing.
The next annual meeting of the As
sociation will he held in Rome the
4th to Gth of May. We would bo glad
to see every physician in our county
enrolled In the Society. There is an
other advantage that we might men
tion, and that is that every member
receives the Journal, a monthly de
voted to medicine. This is furnished
free to all members. Membership in
the State Association i3 based on tho
local society.
