Stale of Cejrpia. Tha pro ent Stalj
Sanatorium can accommodate only US
white patients, and na ne ircei.
Tb«re Is urgent need for an appro-
■nrialjcn of 5500,030 for th? construe
tion of a modern, properly oquinpoJ
hcspltal for the ea:e cf whltas. th?::
Hie pro:f at pjaut could he used for tho
treatment of neurons. This would
mean that 300 white? and 100 ne
groes could be placed undor treatmant
at one time—even tlilr* would bn only
partly adequate.
Other State* have appropriate
larger sums for their Tubcrculaui *
hospitals than we are asking for.
Mississippi has rcc ntly approprlatnd
$1 ,25".000 for this purpose. I.oulsia-.a
has but lately appropriated $.180,000
for neeroes alone; Texas. $1,250,All;
for a Sanatorium for early case,
alone; Virginia has three State San
atorlunia, two for white* and one for
negroes. North Carolina hus a San
atorlum, much larger than Georgia.
The Stale of Georgia appropriated
for 1920-11121, $56,000 per year lor
maintenance, a mere bagatelle as
compared to other States. The State
Legislature did a most noble thing in
making such large appropriations last
>ear for (education. Now If we can
convince them that health should be
considered as important ns duration
we cen get our necessary large ho*
pital.
Tuberculosis i-t a tremendous cause
of physical disability and an Important
roason why so many children must be
kept from school, either directly be
cause they themselves have the dis
ease or because of the poverty result
ing from Tuberculosis in the family.
It is among the young that Tuberou
losis is most prevalent -Georgia must
not neglect the physical health. Illit
eracy is bad enough, but illiteracy
plus bad health is a combination well
ttigli insuperable. Georgia must have
her peoples' health and education pro
gress in parallel*.
Almost all cases need treatment fot
a longer period than is now possible
at the Sanatorium. A larger hospital
will make it possible to care for pa
tieqts for a longer period of time with
much better results. Kiery true Geor
gian who lias the welfare of the stute
and people at heart should take an
active part in advocating the passage
of the appropriation for this pur
pose. by appealing to their Retire
i.entatlve.i and showing them the ne
cMalty for such an Institution.
