Washington.—The Australian

Chicago.—T. e plaint of many per
sons for years that if a store didn't
spend so roach for advertising ' the
cost of that suit of clothes would be
about half what if was” is proved
to be wholly false by Prof. Iloiacc
Secriat, director of the bureau of
busine33 reasearch of Northwestern
University, who has just finished an
elaborate survey of the retail cloth
ing trade. Prof. Socrist lias just
gone to Rochester, N. Y., to deliver
four addresses in as many days at
the annual meeting of the National
Association of Retail Clothiers, wnoi
membership furnished the informat*
upon which his survey is based.
If a Chicagoan buys two suits of
clothes a year and pays an average
of $50 each for the suit—an expendi
ture of $100—Prof. Secrist discovert
that of this total net sale, only $2.07
went for advertising and of this small
amount but $1.59 went to the newspa
pers for newspaper advertising. The
survey covered a three-year period
and is regarded as furnishing stand
arda for the retail clothing trade.
Whereas, the newspapers get only a
little over $1.50 of that $100.00, prof.
Socrist shows that tho landlord, for
rent, got $2 64, and that wages took
$12.48 The f)onus plan is not used
by a majority of the retail clothiers
and wherever it exists, it generally is
in city plants of the largest companies,
the survey reveals.
Thlrty.six states with 569 stores con
tributed the information, the North
western professor reports. The survey
was in progress a year, the results are
published in six volumes and the total
cost whs about $50,000.
“This survey is said to be unique,”
commented Prof. Secrist before leav
ing for Rochester, “As far as gnown
a similar study never was made in any
other Industry or trade,”
Contest Monday Afternoon
With Mercer University in
Tie With No Score By
Either Team.
The first game of football staged
on the athletic fields of the Gtorgia
Millitary College this season took
place Monday afternoon when the
local students went up against the
strong team from Mercer University.
The game resulted in tire between
tho two teams and at that not a score
was credited to either the visitors or
the locals. The Contest was hard
fought and bore evidence of the fact
that there are a number of real ath
letes at the G. M. C this year. The
Miercor aggregation showed up splen
didly, though the points made by the
loiyil team excelled what might be
credited to the team from the Macon
college. (
Quito a few fans were art to wit
ness this first game of the season and
on account of te splendid showing
made by the local boys there is every
reason to believe that all the games to
be played this season will be well at
tended. The spectators were free to
express the opinion that the G. M. C,
bunch bids fare to holding a winning
hand at the end of the prep football
season.
The Mercer squad was composed of
good players. The line and backfteld
players were practically all varsity
men, while members of Mercer’J
second team played the end. With all
tho first men from tho Mercer in
stitution the aggregation soon realize
ed that they had tb< ir hands full
and after all efforts nothing was ac
complished in the way of of scoring
on the prep boys.
Arrangements are now being made
for another game with Merce next-
Tuesday or Wednesday. This game
will be played in Millodgeville also.
