Thirty-Two Thousand Eight Hundred

A roorrM study made by tho Bureau
of Vital Slatlatirs of the Georgia State
.Hoard of Health of percentage* of
death in certain age periods has
brought out tho following interesting
and astonishing facts:
There wore 32,843 deaths in Geor

from tyj hoid rud of these 18.3% were

age group. Of tho 353 deaths -from
whooping cough, 98.7% were in tite
1-9 year group; of the 408 diphtheria
deaths 95.4% were in this period; of
Hie 2,643 deaths from tuberculosis,
:t.2% wore in the period; 1.6% of tho
pellagra deaths occcurreJ in ebll*

rs something wrong? With the age
period 1-9 represented by percent ages,
—and high percentages,—of deaths un
der every heading, ‘the only ■ oaul'tsion
that can be drawn is, that wo are not
considering our children the "nation's
best asset" nor yet are we giving much
consideration to the future, if the "hope
of the future" la allowed to be sub
ject to conditions so ruinous. There
Is something wrong; something wrong

WASH YOUR HANDS;
SANITATE YOUR HOME
A very large percentage of the sick
ness of the human race is due to the
eating or ditinhing of human excre
ment. This is not very pleasant to
think of and less elegant to write
about, yet it is necessary sometimes
for us to know unpleasant and distate
ful things. When one takes typhoid
fever he has partaken of human
faeces; when wo have dysentery wa
are obliged to have taken into our
mouths the germs that are thrown off
from one who has the dlseaeo in thb
movement of the bowels. Thia la
also true of other diseases.
There are many svavs in which thesa
germs are transmitted from the host,
the diseased person, to the weil pet*
ron. If all human excrement could
immediately handled in a sanitary
way these diseases would become an
cient history.
One thing that everyone could do
to lessen' the incidence of these dis
eases would he the constructing of
sanitary closets. They are inexpen
sive and almost anyone could have
a safe privy. For the amount of the
investment we do not know of a great
er return; it is the very best, cheapest
life insurance policy that you can
tak'e out.
The State Hoard of Health, Atlanta,
issues bulletins giving you instructions
how to construct sanitary closets for
rural homos and schools, and send
■when requested working plans, so that
anyone can build such a closet, it
is your duty to yourself and family,
let alone to your neighbor, to build
an approved closet. Write for these

intelligent enough to suspect anthrax
pustule. He found out about tbe shav
ing brush anil sent it to the Stats
Board of Health Laboratory in Atlanta
and anthrax germs wore found burled
in the glued ends of the bristle3.
Shaving brushes are made from
horse hair and pig bristles imported
to this country from Chinit^ Japan and
Russia. Unless imported horse hair
is carefuily disinfected, it is apt to
contain germs of anthrax, a disease
very common in these countries. Gur
Government now enforces very rigid
regulations in regard to the disinfec
tion of imported hair. Brushes made
since these regulations went into ef
fect are apt to be safe enough. But
we must still be on our guard against
any brush which does not have the
name and trade mark of some reliable
brush manufacturer.
A suspicious brush may be rendered
safe by soaking it for four hours in a
hot 10 per cent solution of formalin,
such as cart ho purchased front any
