. A very interesting survey of Geor
gia's water power resources, both de
veloped and undeveloped, has been
prepared by Dr. S. W. McCallte, Btate
geologist. It shows that only one-
jtenth of the total wr.ter power of
|the stato fcaa yet bctu developed, but
^•et tula one-tenth, approximating
fti ,1<8 hosepower. Is equal to an
annual coal energy of 17,381,000 tons
Discussing developed water power
"he says. —
"Estimating four tons of coal as
equivalent to one hosepower hour,
the state's total water power as
shown above is equal annually to the
potential energy of 17,381,000 tons ol
coal. To deliver this huge coal ton
nage in one year it would require 793,-
60-tons carloads daily on 33 cars per
hour, or one car in 1.8 minutes. The
money value of our water power as
above given in coal tonnage, rating
coal at $r, per Von, is $86,906,500 per
annum.
"In this connection I wish to add a
word concerning Burton Storage dam-
wliich is one of the state’s greatest
engeering enterprises in the way of
conserving our water powers. The
storage capacity of this dam which is
110 feet high, and backs the water up
stream for about ten miles, is 5,280,-
000 cubic feot, which i3 sufficient to
operate continually the power plant
at Tallulah Falls for 36 days. This
energy converted into .coal tonnage
would represent approximately 200,-
7)00 tons of coal which valued at $5
per ton, would represent $1,000,000.
"It might be of interest to know
that tho Burton reservoir holds suf-
sumption for more than 3 1-3 years,
and that the runn-off from the rain
fall in that part of Rabun county is
ample to fill the reservoir more than
twice annually."
The Burton dam Is the latest
achievement of the Georgia Railway
and Power Company. Due to the
millien c<f dollri.-s spent. In North
Ceorgin and ether sections cf the
stato by power companies, Georgia
has been called ‘‘the electric hub of
the South.” The Georgia company In
addition to tlie enormous power it
has deveolped in this state ha3 con
necting lines with powor companies
over five states.
