MAY USE MAGNET
TO RAISE SHIPS
Submarine Invention Passes Sal*
vage Test of the British
Admiralty.
CARLOADS OF PRESENTS
hUK MACON ORPHANS
LIFTS 16 TONS OF METAL
Believed That Much of Steel and
Metala Lost Through Operations
»f German Submarines May
De Recovered.
London.—Fishing with submarine
magnets for allied ships which strew
the bottom of the North sea and the
English channel may he attempted on
a large scale In the near future If an
Invention recently placed at the dis
posal of the British admiralty proves
to be practicable In deep-sea salvage
operations. It Is believed that the de
vice may recover much of the loss In
steel and metals caused by the subma
rines. It Is also probable that It may,
to some extent, replace the deep-sea
diver.
Will Lift 16 Tom.
The “submarine electro-magnet" Is
octugonal In shnpe, three feet In width
between the opposite sides, two and a
hnlf Inches In depth, weighs seven
hundredweight, nnd Is strong enough
to lift 16 tons of metal. In salvage
work three magnets will be employed
simultaneously, In order to get a good
hold on the larger sections of armor
plate.
Gigantic searchlights will first he
turned on the wreck, and after the
vessel has been blown to pieces by ex
plosives the magnets will go down to
search for anchors chain cahles and
pieces of metal. The power will be
sufficient to raise all fragments of
metal, even though they be encased In
wood.
The mechanical diver’s possibilities
were demonstrated recently at an ex
hibition at the Albert docks, Silver-
town, attended by representatives of
the British admiralty, the Fort of Lon
don authority and the salvage and
shipbuilding companies.* Into-36 feet
of water were thrown several steel
girders weighing two tons, some gas
cylinders, castings, a section of rail
way switch and other metallic objects.
Brought Up Glrdsra.
Swung by s crane, the magnet dlvt-d
and, to the amazement of the wit
nesses, came up with the steel girders
glued to its under side. The operation
was repeated until the last piece of
metal had been raised.
At one stage of the demonstration
there was lively competition between a
human diver and the diving magnet.
The ateel railway switch, owing to Its
peculiar shape, could not be located
uutll a diver hud gone down and placed
the mugntt in contact with the rails.
“The magnet Is not Intended to sup
plant divers,” said Mr. Neale, head of
the Neale Magnet ('(instruction com-
puny, in charge of the development of
the Invention. "It will be of vulue
chiefly In cases of wrecks in deep wa
ter, or silted up, where divers cannot
*0.
“It will also lie used for loading and
unloading vessels, discharging metallic
ores, lifting machinery and loading
steivl sections from rolling mills. A
current of 16 ainiieres, at 11 pressure
of Vi’W vita, supplies the power.”
Farmers and Others In South Georgia
Are Helping Load Shipments
Camilla, Ga. Dec. 14.— The Meth
odist Orphans' Homo at Macon will
soon begin to receive a string of
Christmas presents larger than any
they have ever received before tt plans
now In operation in South Georgia are
carried out. The farmers could not
sell their excess supplies of food
stuffs and they have no money to
Hparo so they docidcd to give the or
phans of their abundance. Every
church in the Thomasville district has
a very active committee and every
thing Is moving towards great suc
ceed for tho project. One car will
start from Boston, where E. R.
Whaley is in charge and then move
along the A. C. L. Railway from stat-
tlon to nation until loaded. It is
expected that this car will bo finish-1
ed at Camilla If not before.
It is tho plan to then start another,
car and thus send a huge cunlrlbu-1
tion box nil along the line until Su
perintendent J. A. Smith at Macon!
will have to 'borrow all the empty,
smokehouses in Macon to care for the
cargoes. Another ear will start at * 1 *
DonalsonvlUe and move towards Ma
con, stopping at Jakln, Brinson, Iron
City, Attapuigus, Whlgham and Cairo.
Boy Scouts Help.
The cars will contain syrup, canned
goods of all hinds, chickens, flour
lard, meat, potatoes, peanuts, fruits
preserves and everything that the kid
dies at home will cat will be divided
with the little fellows at Macon. The
plan strikes a responsive cord in every
one as the majority of the people are
anxious to do a good part toward the
orphans; it gives that class of people
that are strong on “Home Missions” I
a chance to prove the sincerity of
their arguments.
