Boise, Idaho.—Symbols and algna,
chiseled, It 18 believed, ages ago, were
discovered recently on lava rocka In
a remote section of Owyhee county,
southwestern Idaho.
Many of the inscriptions bear
striking resemblance to Chinese al
phabet characters of today, it was
said, although archeologists say they
muy be anywhere from 400 to 80,000
years old.
Discovery of the Inscriptions, which
are sold to be a mine of archeological
treasure, was mude by Robert Lltn-
bert, n Boise tuxtdermlst. Their exact
location will not be made public until
they are examined thoroughly this
summer by a number of scientists who
are coming here.
The volcanic rock on which the In
scriptions are carved is scattered over
a 30-acre sagebrush flat. In the Im
mediate vicinity are several large
caves, around the entrance of which
tlic rocks also are inscribed. It Is be
lieved these caves never have been
explored. Possibly, it is said, they
contain many relies of scientific value.
Two distinct types of carvings, ideo
graphic and pictographlc, have been
noted. Archeologists belidve tlie ideo
graphic antedates by many years the
pictographlc. Both systems have been
found together on one rock and near
them can lie discerned what appears
to he a third system, supposed to ante-
dale both of the others, but which has
weathered beyond possibility of deci
phering.
Clear bits of this prehistoric writing
are found on one huge water-worn
bowlder li." feet long, 14 feet wide and
5 feet high. Near the center is a
series of triangles believed to indicate
Indian tepees, and next to them are
rows of dots and dashes, thought to
be numerals.
Resemblance of many of the in
scriptions to the characters of the
Chinese alphabet was taken by some
to substantiate the theory that the

Serious ravages causing almost com
plete destruction of the beekeeping In
dustry in purts of Europe by the “Isle
of Wight” disease bus started deter
mined action by American beekeepers
to save their business from similar
losses. Thus far the disease lias not
gained a foothold In this country or
in Canada, and it is believed that
should the disease become established
here beekeepers, queen breeders and
manufacturers oKbee supplies would
quickly he ruined and horticultural in
terests would be seriously damaged.
As a lirst slep toward preventing
this, a meeting was held recently at
the bureau of entomology of the
Vnited States Department of Agricul
ture, which was attended! by special
ists from several nates and Canada
who are Interested in protective meas
ures.
Prevent Introduction of Bees.
The meeting decided to use all feasi
ble efforts to prevent the introduc
tion of queen bees from all foreign
countries except Canada, and to dis-
colirage the introduction of adult bees
into the United States except for ex
perimental and scientific purposes by
the United States Department of Agri
culture. Since there is no known
Isle of Wight disease in Canada and
since it is hoped and expected that
flit* Iioniinjon of Canada will establish
the same safeguards to the beekeeping
industry, it is planned not to establish
any quarantines or prohibitions
against shipments of bees from and to I
Canada.
All tile men who attended the meet
ing wertf of the opinion that the Isle
of Wight disease would lie such a
serious menace to beekeeping on tins

Source of Big Lost.
Isle of Wight disease is caused by a
parasitic mite In adult bees, and is
easily transported by bees shipped
from Europe to America as was
proved during the past summer when
live bees carrying living mites arrived
In Washington from Scotland. The
disease is evidently a serious source
of loss to beekeepers of the British
Isles. It was first observed in 11*04 in
the Isle of Wight, whence came the
name, and in succeeding years It has
spread with considerable rapidity to
nil parts of Great Britain.

YOU.
N othing that we could say would so thoroughly
convince you of the value of Chamberlain’s
Tablets as a personal trial. We can tell you
of thousands who have been permanently cured of
chronic constipation, indigestion, biliousness, sick
headache and disorders of the stomach and liver,
but this will have little weight with you as compared
to a personal trial. That always convinces.
