STOP AIR ACCIDENTS
New Aircraft Engine Eliminates
Use of Gasoline.
Use «f H**vy Fuel Oil, It I* Believed
by Experte, Will Prevent Such
Dltaitere as That to Army
Dirigible Roma.
Baltimore, Md.—Experiments eon-
ducted by the national advisory com
mittee for aeronautics, under the gen
eral direction of I)r. Joseph S. Ames,
have developed an aircraft engine
eliminating the use of gasoline, which
Doctor Ames described us the "funda
mental cause" of lire accidents in the
air.
By the use of heavy fuel oil. Doc
tor Ames said, it is hoped to prevent
such disasters ns that to the army
dirigible ltoma, in which only three
men out of forty-five escaped. Doetor
Ames Is professor of physics at Johns
Hopkins university and chairman of
the executive committee of the aero
nautic organization.
The new engine, a higli speed air
plane wing, and a device which Is
being developed for obtaining data and
making tests under actual service
conditions, will tie reported at ttie
semi-annual meeting of tlie advisory
committee in Washington.
No special processing of the oil em
ployed in the new engine is required.
Doctor Ames said. The motor itself
is a modified Liberty, with pistons
made much longer to provide greater
compression. It has no valves. The
oil, very thick and gummy, is forced
through a jet by a compression pump,
and enters the cylinder under high
pressure.
The greatest problem Involved, Doc
tor Ames said, was to make a motor
of this sort light enough fur aviation,
but be regarded tlds us largely accom
plished. Hi* added that the oil could
be used for automobiles.
RAG DOU TESTER IS
EASILY CONSTRUCTED
Necessary to Eliminate All Weak
or Dead Ears.
Dry Rot Fungus Seriously Weaken*
Germinating Qualities—Glazed
Paper and Strip of Bleached
Muslin Needed.
The rag doll tester, which has snved
many corn crops by eliminating the
poor seed, will have to be brought back
into service this spring, according to
plant disease experts of the Iowa State
college. They say that, due to the
large amounts of corn rot fungus in
many sections, the seed corn ought to
he tested so that the dead or weak
ears can be taken out.
Dry rot fungus stays in the ears and
cannot be detected in the seed. How
ever, wherever it is present it seriously
weakens the germinating qualities, and
often destroys them.

glazed butcher's paper nine or ten
inches wide and six feet long and a
similar strip of good quality bleached
muslin and lay the muslin on the pa
per. The paper is used to prevent the
molds from spreading throughout the
roll. With u heavy pencil mark off
squares about one Inch by one und one-
hnlf inches on the cloth, numbering the
ends of the columns of squares to cor
respond to the ears they came from.
To operate the tester, boil the cloth
in water and place on the paper. Then
place tlie grains of seed corn, taken
at random from the ears, on the damp
cloth germ side down. Place the tips
of the corn oil the same way. Itoll up
the strip with the kernels of the corn
carefully and place the roll on end
in u tub or pall which has about a
quart of water In It. Place a wet sack
over the dolls to prevent their drying
out. Keep at a temperature of 80 to
85 degrees F. The corn will germinate
rapidly.
P.e careful not to place the kernels
too close together in the tester us the
molds, If present, will spread. Where
kernels are weak discard the ear. In
using tlie rug doll tester for second
testings be sure nnd get new paper
and to boil Hie cloth thoroughly so as
to remove any molds that might have
stayed In the cloth.
Pajamas of Hanged Albanians Bear
~» Label “Gift of American
People.'*
Scutari, Albania. — “Gift of the
American people” reud labels on the
pujnma-clud bodies of two notorious
Insurgents which hung from a tree In
the center of this town for several
days.
The Incongruity of the labels evi
dently did not strike the Albanian au
thorities who carried out the execu
tions, as all Ihe pajamas given out to
the poor by American relief workers
are so marked, and these garments
evidently were the only ones available
in which to clothe the condemned men.
