THE MILLEDGEVILLE NEW*
MILLEDGEVILLE, GA.
POVERTY PLEA WILL BE
MADE TO U. S. BY FRANCE
Washington, D. C., July 25.—
France will deluy payment on the
principal ot her debt of $3,500,000,0W
for an indefinite per.od and will
jilead inability to even pay interest
on the debt tor ut least * t/c or three
years, or possibly longer, if the gov
ernment acquiesces in the proposal
brought to Washington by lean Far-
meatier, the French financial envoy.
The French government's attitude
is one of postponing payment as long
as possible, pending the French dis
pute with other Allies over German
reparations, it becam e known Tues
day. M. Parmentier, in his conversa
tion with Secretary of State Hughes
and Secretary of the Treasury Mellon
is understood to iiave pleaded strong
ly that France must depend upon the
present reparations program if the
indebtedness to the United States is
fully met. It is known that the Uni
ted States is skeptical of France get
ting the revenue it expects from Ger
man sources.
The French envoy has submitted
tables of the French, budget, accom
panied by figures of varied classes,
but has failed to show Franco's pos
sible income under a system of tax
ation which this government would
regard as' commensurate wit!
France's ability to pay.
Officials of the government com
pared their own charts with those of
France and these revealed important
discrepancies, it was said. American
estimates far exceed those of France
3n the French import and export ta
bles. France, it is said, displays re
markable recuperative power in its
export record, far greater than is
shown by the figures presented by
Parmentier. These and other farts
are to be considered by the American
commission in negotiations soon to
begin.

Years, Fasts 45 Days
Louisville,K y., July 24.—Accord
ing to a dispatch to the Courier-
Journal from Mount Vernon, Ky.,
Mrs. Betty Coffey, S7 years old, a res
ident of Humble, a little village in
the hills of Hock Castle county, un
dergoing a voluntary fast, Sunday
completed the forty-fifth' day in
which she has declined to partake
of food.
During her fasting it is said, Mrs.
Coffey has taken only a little butter
milk but has drunk large quantities
of water. Mrs. Coffey's fast began
after she learned of the hunger strike
of Rev. William Rice, in the Powell
county mountains who died last week
after going without food sixty-nine
days.
Mr. Rice fasted, he said, so that
lie might convert his neighbors to
Christianity by his sacrifice, but Mrs.
Coffey has never given any definite
reason for her act.
