THE WILLOW FARM.
Stripping the Willow Switches for tho
Northern Market.
A flying trip yesterday to the Oiler willow
farm of Mr. I. C. Plant a mile below the city,
presented a surprise. In a building on the
premises were a number ot negro women and
boys at work stripping the bark and leaves
from the willow switches, tfbis is the first
catting of tho crop of two years’growth, and
he yield will be about two or three tons.
These switches are from four to seven feet
long and sro cut and placed in bundles like
sheaves of wheat They are then taken to the
stripping building and placed In a vat filled
with water. The Urge euCs are then placed In
a peculiar little machine which loosens the
bark for a eouple ol inches. Passing along
on the table they are pUced one by
one in the strippers, a littl* machine,
the invention of Mr. Plai.t, *nd
with a pair of pliers are pulUd
through with one Jerk This process takes off
all the bark and leave*. The switches are then
wiped off with a woolen doth by passing
them through the haurt. They are theu bun
dled aud laid away ta dry.
The little c ntrivance used for stripping
performs Its work admirably Mr Plant sent
to Switzerland aud to the willow farm* In the
North and west for machines, but all were
crude and worked unsatisfactorily. He set
about and soon made one for the pjrpnse
which does Its work rapidly aud effectual y.
All the leaves and b*rk are dried aud haled,
and command a price of twenty-five cents per
pound. They are used for a certa.n kind of
medicine.
Mr. Plant has 400 000 willows now growing
on bis farm. He has within tie past wees
set out 80,010, and they are growing finely. He
will set out his entire levee with them,
and will then have sixty acres in
willows alone. A ton to the acre la the aver
age y eld and the willows wh u shlp^d dried
command 1203 per ton In a dozeu markets.
In three years all he has set out now will be
high enoiish toent. M „
In addition to willows, Mr. Plant utl11z.*s
nearly every Inch of hi* magnificent farm.
His corn Is Just under the ground, his oats
E lanttd in October are in tine condition and
e has a patch of rye that presents a beautiful
sight. Toll patch was planted, especially for
Mr. L. Merkel, the baker, who will this year
bake bread from the yield.
The willow farm Is a success throughout,
and Col E C Grier, who w*s looking at It
yesterday, says the bark and leaves aloue to
say notblDg of the valuable switches, pays
better than cot ton. A visit to the far a will
prove exceedingly Interesting.
