Liberal ca*n advances made. *cptl8Sro1awdw3n* rwikw«i i face* and hashed i were gathered In a room in ’a boose on Fort street east. For two Tear* a poor old woman had lived there, not exactly a beggar nor an object of charity, but cer tainly in want. She had a husbind When she first moved there—a poor old man whose days coold not lie long; but one day be was missing. Be may have fallen into the river, or be may have wandered out into the country and died. This.lcft the old woman alone, and there were day* and days in which no one -went near her or addressed her. The other day when she felt the chill of death approaching she wanted some one with her. She had lived alone, bnt she could not die ihat way. She wept as tender bands elapsed hers and kind voice, addressed her. Death had already placcd its mark on ber face, and the women eould do nothing. While their tears fell upon her wrinkled bands she passed away as a child sleeps. There was bnt iittlcjn the room be yond an old blue chest—battered and brnised and splintered, but yet bolding together. It had seen strange times, that old blue chest. It bad held silks and broadcloths— . it bad surely held rags, it had been moved "from house to house and from town to town. It had listened to laughter, and had heard sobs and moans. It had grown old no taster than the woman whose hands had so often lifted its lid. Il bad doubtless kept the company of good 'carpets and furniture and crockery. ami_ laughing romping children had climbed over it or hidden in it. It,had faded, and it* hinges were rusiy and weak, but it had out-lived it* owner. The women looked about for gar ments in which to cn.hroud the dead. Nothing was in sight. One Of them lifted . he I id of the old hi in chest, and called the others to help drag it out from its dark corner, it held treasure—such treasure as men coaid uot buy nor poverty steal away. There was a dress of fine material, cut after a fashion of long years ago. For twenty years thi ckest bad been it* guardim. It would have sold for a tew dollars. ; but though the gnawings of hunger had come often and the cold had fonght its way *o her marrow- that poor old woman would not pan with that relic of better days. It may have been a link to eonneetber with wealth and love. Beneath it was treasure still more priceless.— Carefully wrapped in pa’-er was a •silver dime more than fifty years old. A week's fast would not have aentherto the baker's with that ; relic. A child, dead in its long i years, hadworn that dime around ; its neck as a gift or talisman. There , was a child's mitten, stained and ' worn, but a mitten knit by a proud .young mother for her child. It could not speak to tell 'he dint past, but it had power. As the. women saw it they covered their faces with their aprons and wept. There wasa boy’s cap and agirl’s hat, both so old and faded and time- eaten tba.t hey had to be tenderly handdled. The women looked from them to the poor old while face on the bed and whispered - “None but a good mother would have treasured these relics. Site was old find poor, bnt her heart was pure.” Deeper down, ns if to bnfBc the search of Time itself. » »*» familiar toy—a child's dumb watch. Hands | were broken and gone, face scratch ed and ease battered, but the wo men handled it a, if a touch would shiver it. There was a dolls head, a boy's fish line, some toy chairs, a yarn" bail ;and other things to show that in the long ago that dead wo man bad felt the soft kisses of cliil- ! dren, heard their “good nights” and thanked God that she was blessed. Each relic was wept over —each was replaced will* fresh tear stain*. They asked the old blue chest no questions. Its relics might here been voiceless to a man, but to a woman and mother each one had a tale in words as plain as print. They shed more tears as they bent again over the poor old dead, and they said to each otbsr: “If she had only told of this how We would have loved her ami nought to lighter, hersorrow. -’ , from - 5 WB „ ^ an<i ,„„ r , ul Hut SDC had gone* She II ill coinc i filled by return mail. J., last week, a new locorno- -Jive of peculiar construction, in tended for the Pittsburgh, ■ Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad. 1 Bjme Fontaine, the iuventer, [ claims that this locomotive can be | made to go ninety miles an hour, 1 while the machinery is run no fasi- '. er than that of an ordinary Income- •tive traveling at the rate of sixty miles an hour. The machinery is fill on top of the boiler instead of nuder il. The driving wheels rests on another wheel, which in turn rests on the track. This lower i wheel has two rims, one a tool small er than the other. The outer rim 1 touci.es the track, ntid the inner or smaller rim supports the driving 1The*l. The motion of the driving Wheel thus communicated is uiagni- | fled by this arrangement so that j ths lower wheel turns one-third : faster than the driving wheel, and so the speed is increased. The i Smaller rim of the lower wiicci I bears to the targer rim a relation similar to Jhijt of ;► very large hub is grc-atiy magnified at the periphe ry of the wheel. In the same way the .notion of the driving wheel in thU.ea*e is magnified by the pecti- j liar .arrangement of the wheel it j rests upon. Mr. Fontaine believes ' that bis locomotive, if it were not i for the increased resistance of the •it, could be tun at the rate of one hundred and seven miles an hour, ile exjK-eU vkjo make ninety miles - an hour easily.
