For their temporal welfare, honors and respectability, we suggest to our young men the essential necessity of just now turning from politics to the gl nous and inviting fields of business; honest w< r\ is a motor which will construct fortune* 4 , strong and durahl Labor with hand and head will create power—power which can sway gov ernmeuts, enlighten and educate the ignorant, protect the weak, cultivate the good, nurture the beautiful and make the whole earth glad. In an article elsewhere ve a’*uded to the 4ownward tendency of the age, M manifested in political games. It was not our intention to advise young men to desert the nation, states or mu- nicipnlites to greedy politicians or wicked plunderers. The right of fran chise is our bulwark of common liber ty; and we claim the right of a I roe ex ercise thereof. Had men in office make bad governments, and no ono“ should .shut himself from public service, when the people seek and req uiro hi* ser vices. What we warned against was that evil spirit which scrambles for public !>atronagc for the suhsorvance of private mdr. We can suggest no surer way to reach that period in American history so much hoped for, when the office shall seek the man, than the plan pro posed in our article—for young men to shun politics.
