In an article elsewhere ve a’*uded

was not our intention to advise young
men to desert the nation, states or mu-
nicipnlites to greedy politicians or
wicked plunderers. The right of fran
chise is our bulwark of common liber
ty; and we claim the right of a I roe ex
ercise thereof. Had men in office make
bad governments, and no ono“ should
.shut himself from public service, when
the people seek and req uiro hi* ser
vices.
What we warned against was that
evil spirit which scrambles for public
!>atronagc for the suhsorvance of private
mdr. We can suggest no surer way to
reach that period in American history
so much hoped for, when the office
shall seek the man, than the plan pro
posed in our article—for young men to
shun politics. And. when that period
docs come, if ever, there will he honor
in office. Not until then. Political
shrewdness and chicanery are false
promoters to honorable station, amk

The exempt tax on manufactures is
capitalized at $4,138,375. The estimate
of probable receipts for the fiscal year
