to the decrees of the war. They have
“accepted the situation’’ in good faith.
Even Senator Brown agrees that the
South has come up to the full measure.
The “Blue’’ and the “Gray* have met
times without number, and stacked
aims. The attempt has, in short, been
honest to fill up the bloody chasm be
tween the two sections of our great
common country.
Atlanta has gotten up the great In
ternational Cotton Exposition in honor
ol the good feeling. Indeed, that great
show is au exponent of future good
will—yea, it is more; it is a huge altar
upon which the fires of reconciliation
burn incense to Northern sentiment
The nation’s iocendiary, the famous
Sherman, has been invited down to
Atlanta —an extreme evidence of a dis
position to bury the hatchet The
pious, conciliating Colquitt Governor
of the State, has lent all his power and
speech-making ability to appease the
North.
The sacrifioe has been ample, and
enough to be acceptable and effectual.
lint what is the result ? How has
the sacrifice been met and what are the
facts which stare os in the face ?
Have we been met with the spirit of
reconciliation?
Let us look to Virginia, and let the
lesson taught us by the reeent election
in that State answer.
The Northern papers have boasted of
our prosperity under the intelligent
role of the white people, and say that
the south is the place for future in
vestment. But do we not, despite all
this, see reconstruction revived in a
different form in Virginia? Look at
what the Guitcau administration and
Northern money have done in that
State! Have not all the powers of the
North as well as the instrumentali
ties of the national administration been
turned against the South to put the
white people under ? Is not this a di- -
rect blow against the prosperity so
much boasted of? When the tes
comes do we not see where the
Northern aid invariably goes?
It is very plain now.that the North
ern press, even hope for a result like
that of Virginia in all the Southern
States. They now boast of the Ma
son and Dixon line being removed
further South.
And yet the people of the South are
disregarding their own' self respect
and breaking their necks to show
their loyalty! The bolter plan
would be for us to attend strictly to
our own affairs; look after our State
prosperity ourselves, and, with an ut
ter indifference fo Northern sentiment
or Northern opinion, let national mat
ters alone.

Tub Boston Pott very truly re
marks: “Southern people who con
gregate at Atlanta are getting tons of
advice from Northern visitors. Much
of it is good and some of it seems to
resemble what is known as taffy.*’
It seems to be a settled fact that
Col. M. E. Thornton has purchased
the Atlanta Pott-Appeal. It is un
derstood that the paper will bean In

and will turn its attention to the great
task of Kahonising Georgia.
Now that Gniteau has placed the
bandlo of the party whip into tho
hands of Arthur, Grant and Conkling,
it is very evident that quite a number
of the shining lights in the Republi
can party, including John Sherman
are too uneasy, to sleep well.
It is becoming painfully appsrert
that the precocious wickedness of. the
young people of this country is caus
ed by the flashy, trashy, licentious

ed in such Targe quantities for the
boys and girls. This class of litera
ture should, be suppressed by law in

This is the season of tho year when
a let of interviews may be expected
from Alexander H. Stephens. That
overwhelming statesman is about to
arrive in Washington, and he will find
such correspondents as do not find him.
The reader of the duly newspaper, how
ever, has long since learned to skip
the interview with Stephens.—Phila

William Jokes, the young man
who attempted to assassinato Guitoau
on Saturday last, has been admitted fo
bail in the small sum of 9600. This is
an outrage, and must be condemned
by all people who have a proper re
gard for law and a Retire to see tho
same impartially administered. Jones
is just as much an assassin as Gniteau,
and is subject to the same extreme
penalty of the law. It • is the doty of
the government to prosecute him with
the same vigor with which Gniteau is
prosecuted.
Wasmuiotoh Star: -Senator Ms-

theory, as expressed by himself, is:
'I want every man to vote, and I want
him to vote as he pleases, and to be

tolerance.’ This sounds very well,
but would be much more impressive if
Mr. Mahons had lived [up to the high

in the Senator’s profession of enlarged
intolerance.’’

Gniteau Shot st Again.
Washikotok, November 19.—While
Gniteau was being taken back to jail
this afternoon, a man on horseback rode
np beside the van and fired a shot at
Goitean. The ball graxed his trra, and
the man rode off and escaped.
Washinqtok, November 19.—The
driver of the prison van gives the fol
lowing particulars of the attempt to
shoot Guitean. The facts are sub
stantially these: Upon the adjourn
ment of the court the van started ar
usual for the jail, having a policeman
as guard, who sat on the seat with the
driver. Belore reaching the Capitol
the guard noticed ayonng man on
horseback riding leisurely behind the
van. Near the corner of East Capitol
and First streets, the horsemen rode
directly up to .the rear of tho van and
hastily peered through the small gnt-
ing. Goitean was aloue in the van and
seated on the right hand ride—the
seats running lengthwise of tho van.
After evidently satisfying himself ol
the location of tho prisoner, the horse
man wheeled suddenly to the left of
the van and fired directly through it
He then dashed to the front of the van
and pointed hie pistol at tho driver
with the evident intention of intimidat
ing him or stopping the van. The
driver was somewhat excited and in
response to an inquiry of a reporter
said that perhaps he intended to stop
the ran by shooting, one of tho horses.
Seeing an armed policeman by the ride
of the driver, he exclaimed, “I’ve shoi
tho — of a v ” and putting spur*
to his horse, started down East Capitol
streot in the direction of the Congree-
rional Cemetery. The policeman fired
one shot at the fast disappearing horse
man, and the driver of the van whip
ped his horse* into a gallop and kept
in eight of him for several blocks. The
would-be avenger wee, however,
mounted npbn s blooded horse, and
readily escaped into the outer country.
-He was described as a smooth faced
man, about twenty-five yeara old, snd
a dashing horasman. He had on a
dark brown suit of clothes.
The van then proceeded to the jail,
snd Guitean was taken out in a state
of great excitement. Ho exclaimed:
“I have been shot. Notify Major
Brock et once. Tdt him to arrest Ihe
scoundrel and have him dealt with is
ho deserves.” On examination it was
found that the hall bad just graxed
Goitesn’s left wrist, inflicting a mere
scratch. The ball struck the opposite
side of the van and fell npon tho fljor,
where it was found on retching the
jail.
The announcement of the attempt
upon Guiteau*s life created intense ex
citement on the street, and all sorts of
rumors were at once in circulation.
The wonid-be killer was seen aboat
the Court Honse' this afternoon and
attempted to get admitted daring the
day bnt failed. He was also seen to
monnt his hone near the Court House
soon after the van left and ride leisure
ly after it. It was rumored that he
hailed from Illinois, but there seems to
be no foundation for the report. It
was whispered in the crowd without
the Court House, just previous to ad
journment, that to day would fie the
last of the trial. A remark was also
heard in the crowd that if any .one
wanted to see Guitean they had better
do so to-day. This would lead to a
belief that more than‘one person was
awaro that the attempt would be
made.
Washisotox, November 19.—A
young man named Jones, living m the
country, near the city, and known as a
crank, has been arrested as the man
who fired at Guitean this afternoon.
